If there's ever been an example of the old saying, "Timing is Everything" - he reinforced it in 72 million ways.
He basically paved the way for the OMG money era for both current and future star QB's in the NFL, all because of a miraculously narrow window of opportunity that materialized due to the regular starting QB being sidelined because of injury, not to mention one of the best defensive units in the league in decades. Not that he was a below-average QB that season, he wasn't. He stepped up and contributed, and in the process became the league's hottest available commodity, primarily because of that defense and his game peaking at just the right time.
Then the offer came. No more playing second fiddle to a legendary QB, an opportunity to be THE GUY on a new team in a weak division. Then owner, Bob McNair (who has since passed away) offered him life-changing money, a contract worth $72 million ($37 million guaranteed). He would be the starter that upcoming season.
But it didn't take long for McNair to experience a debilitating bout of Buyer's Remorse. The once-hot commodity became ice cold not long after the ink dried on the lucrative, OMG money contract. In his first official season as starter, he threw 15 touchdowns against 16 interceptions. After that inaugural season with a new team, McNair couldn't get rid of him quick enough. That very next season, he was eventually dealt back to the team that let him walk two years prior. After limited action in 2017 as a backup that bore no signs of further competencies, he left to join a team where quarterbacks ultimately off their careers - the Miami Dolphins.
After competing in a whopping 49 games in his career, with an average QB rating during those 7 seasons of 78.0, he reportedly announced earlier today that he's finished with professional football, at 28 years of age.
Enjoy your retirement, Brock Osweiler. You, my man, made out like an absolute bandit.
