Many of us started as minimalists. As a kid, I played with a 3w, 4 clubs and a putter. I played a half set for years before the internet existed. I still only carry 10 max and often down to 7. Everybody has their version.

sdandrea1 Agreed but that was economics in my case. Now I have money and sadly visit some golf-related site that encourages buying, sorry HO-ing, more and more golf gear and yet promote smaller sets of clubs. Venus - Mars thing going.

Same here. Dad was USAF E7 with 4 kids. He cobbled together whatever he found and handed down and that was my bag. Now, I'm attracted to the simplicity and gamesmanship (shot making) of it. Plus, playing shorter courses requires fewer clubs.

There you got it. Shot making and manufacturing shots, fighting ball to carry various yardages, NOT playing the ball in the air to x amount of yardage anti-PGA. More old time golf pitching, chipping, bump and run. Doesn't depend on pristine agronomy and greens or playing a lot of forced carry. Nelson, Sarazen, Locke, Jones, etc.

Last Tee Definitions:

Minimalist- Light Weight Bag that is carried. 6 to 8 clubs. They are chasing what is good and pure on the links.

Maximalist- I will get a pic of @Bravopilot the next time we play. That is definitely maximalist. Only guy I have ever seen with two push carts in use at one time. Capitalist consumerism personified.

At 74, I am 86 - 90 with a 43.50" driver. IMO you have to compare shaft length to compare club head speed.

Not bad for such a young guy. 😉 I'm 70, have no clue about my swing speeds, don't care. I hit it, go find it and hit it again.

Driver - 225
4 wood - 195
7 wood - 175 (which is also my 4 iron distance)

These are averages. Some rare days I have a little more pop for no apparent reason though.

Thanks Johnny. This was not a contest just an inquiry to see if I am in the ball park. When I play against others my age it seems my drives are a tad shorter, but I don't really care if I am in the fairway. Metal driver is 44' @ 10.5* w/ 13.3 oz wt. Persimmons 43" @ 11* w/14.5 oz wt. I don't give a rip about data. Always turned off GPS and never use a range finder. Found my SS by accident hitting in the net at DSG.

Simulators in general yield poor data so don't worry about driver SS as you said it's about keeping it in the short grass.

I use 43.50" persimmon or 44" GS Hi-COR + for driver but many times use a 17* fairway wood off tee and 1st club on fairway shots.

Remember, it's a scoring contest, not a distance contest. People have trouble separating those. I have guys in my large leagues that have seen my scores but haven't played on a team with me yet. They typically assume that I'm a long hitter. WRONG!😉

Back in the day, we played evens/odds with a full bag. One set was divided by 2 kids into 2 bags with a extra putter added. One day you played the even numbered clubs, the next day you played the odd numbered clubs.

This is how Charlotta and Annika Sorenstam learned how to play as they were tennis phenom's as children and golf was a side attraction.

Great idea. At age 12 I learned to play with a 1/2 set and 3 wood and played those for 3 or 4 years. I think it taught me a lot about how to take something off a shot for proper distance. I hope to get back out this year even with a bum left shoulder/arm with some kind of abbreviated swat swing. I plan to use a 18° Soolong driver, M3 & M7 Heavy sole rescues (Perfect clubish), two high loft iDrive hybrids, and an Acer XK Flipper. That would be 7 clubs with Mentorsports Triad III putter.
