I checked the loft on these hickories this morning and they come in at:
Brassie Wood @ 14*
Ginty Wood @24*
#2 @24*
#4 @ 33*
#5 @ 38*
PW @ 44*
Putter @ 10* (get that!)

Now a days I just buy matching irons in the lofts I am looking for or pull out of an existing set:
10.5* Driver
21* hybrid or wood
30* 6 iron
34* 7 iron
42* 9 iron
50* Gap W.
Putter

I don't worry about brand matching. Or even style. I'd have my 21 & 29 degree as a hybrid, and irons in the other 2. Just find a brand in each that you like and fits you well. My $.02

That’s what I’ve been thinking about doing. Unfortunately I don’t have access to anything to try that. I’d have to look and buy sight unseen and I don’t know what to even look for these days

north-bc This is the old hickory basic set up.

Brassie – serves as both a driver and fairway wood, about 13-14 degrees loft
Mid-Iron – for long iron shots, about 25-27 degrees loft
Mashie – for approach shots, about 34-36 degrees loft
Mashie Niblick – short approach and pitch shots, about 43-47 degrees loft)
Niblick – lofted for bunker and pitch shots, 52 -57 degrees loft
Putter – for putting and maybe defending yourself

north-bc Not sure if you are just starting out?
May I suggest: (* is degrees of loft)
Get a 3 or 4 wood about 15* -17* to use for the tee box.
Add a 22* hybrid iron for long shots off the fairway or long par 3's.
Add a 7 iron about 34-36* for all round 120-40 yard shots
Add a 9 iron 42* for shots 100 yards out
Add a PW at 48* for around the green
Lastly add a putter

Six clubs! Thats it! Essentially all you need to get around the course. You can add more clubs as time goes on. Start at good will, thrift shops, or this forum on buy/sell, and buy just what you need to get started. Used quality clubs can be had very economically if you shop around. Callaway, Titleist, Hogan, Ping, are some good names if you find them. Cavity backs are great for learning on as they are forgiving. This information is assuming you are just beginning golf.

Definitely not starting out. Been golfing for way too long now. Just looking to make it simpler for me and the squirrels that are running around in the old noodle. I actually tried it last year and didn’t notice a difference in scores.

north-bc My apologies for assuming. I've been playing 47 years this year. I don't think you can go wrong with minimalist concept. It boils the game down to the essentials, requires creative shotmaking, and is far more fun and lightweight compared to a monster bag of clubs being lugged around. My six to 7 clubs setup works great for me to score mid 80's from Sr. Tees/5500 yds. Walking anytime I can of course. Back to golfs roots IMHO.

Guys....keeping this thread alive....but just how many times can you virtue minimal clubs. I've been following the Hickory Hacker on youtube and he often just plays with four or five hickories. I'm still at six to seven clubs for a round. Hickories, persimmon blade era, or moderns don't make much difference to me score wise. Only big difference is when using the modern Taylormade driver it does go further and is more forgiving. That just make you hone in more using persimmon drivers and more premium on second shots. Cheers.

Only reason is size of head and playing length. Hit a 43.50" steel head and a 43.50" persimmon distance will be close.

Played these clubs today..these 1959 Mac irons are SWEET! (have the full set which I refurbed) Driving the TM 3 wood further than normally do my driver. Next time out deleting the 9 iron and going down to 6 clubs. Shot 42 on 9 holes playing 2850 yds. Greens were TERRIBLE or could have shot in 30's....excuses.

fatshot Yes sir the CF4000 ceramic "heated" faces. They are chipped some from all the years but no noticeable effect on my game. Found them in a thrift shop late last year and picked up the 2-9 irons with original grips ($16). Carefully removed the leather grips for reuse and put new rubber grips on them. Re filled paint, and buffed out. Never owned any MACS but got turned on to these last year from Advanced Ball Striking forum where they are addicted to old MACS. First time playing them today... (just 3 irons) impressed to say the least. Solid thud at impact on the forged heads. Great feel at 15.6 oz per club.

Played earlier last week with the minimalist bag. Actually 41 for nine was good, got lucky few putts.

After the round, I realized two strokes I listed, could blame it on not having the right club or skill, BUT looking back a different club selection for previous shot, I would not have had an issue.

Bag, 4w, 4h, 5h, 7i, 8i, pw, Putter.

New Club Added for Next Round - The THINK Srategy/Position Club or at least wake it up and use it.

Played a round with full bag of new cobras (10 clubs) today with cart and hated it. (Shot 85) Never used the 8,9, 45* PW. I'm sticking to the 59' Mac's 7 club mini bag till further notice and walking if all possible.😒 Too much stuff.

Next outing is 10.5 driver, 21 degree Moonwood 8, 6h, 8h, W, SW, putter. Tomorrow or Friday.
