May I suggest: (* is degrees of loft)
Get a 3 or 4 wood about 15* -17* to use for the tee box.
Add a 22* hybrid iron for long shots off the fairway or long par 3's.
Add a 7 iron about 34-36* for all round 120-40 yard shots
Add a 9 iron 42* for shots 100 yards out
Add a PW at 48* for around the green
Lastly add a putter
Six clubs! Thats it! Essentially all you need to get around the course. You can add more clubs as time goes on. Start at good will, thrift shops, or this forum on buy/sell, and buy just what you need to get started. Used quality clubs can be had very economically if you shop around. Callaway, Titleist, Hogan, Ping, are some good names if you find them. Cavity backs are great for learning on as they are forgiving. This information is assuming you are just beginning golf.
