We often had an ongoing discussion back on FGI, about the caddies helping the players read the greens. Nick (aka Gwog) was always preaching that the ability to read greens was just as much an important part of the game as was the actual golf swing. We won't even get into the caddies lining their players up to the target before they would swing the club...
He's essentially correct. I mean, I've used caddies before, I've listened to their advice about some of the quirkiness of the greens I've played. Of course, they weren't familiar with my putting stroke, had no idea if I was aggressive or a die-in-the-hole type. There was no way they could really help me outside of offering something along the lines of "this putt breaks left" etc.
But Bones spent 20+ years with Phil. He knew his player's putting stroke better than anyone, and Bones was an exceptional green reader. Phil had an enormous advantage having Bones help him on his reads. An advantage that some, especially the more traditionalists in nature, feel shouldn't be allowed.
The green reading books... I honestly don't care. But if I'm in the group playing behind Bryson or Webb Simpson, guys who've become dependent on them, I'd probably want them banned too.
