I get why he apologized. Throw yourself at the mercy of the fanbase, which quite frankly doesn't give two shits about it either way, and then let them help you fight the league for light disciplinary action... make Goodell and the league look like the bad guys.
It's not the worst tactic. But I don't see any logic behind continuing to fight the local authorities in a legal battle when all it does is give the story another 2 months worth of legs to run on, with his character continuing to be dragged through the mud all the while. The league doesn't need a criminal conviction to pursue disciplinary action if it's a code of conduct violation, especially for the team owners who are held to a higher standard.
