garyt1957 It's tough to know what we would do in situations that we have no chance of ever being in. But I'd like to think that I would have given the guy $50K or so. Hey, I just won over a million bucks, and I have plenty more millions in the bank. I can change this guy's life and not even miss it. Besides, even with giving him the extra cash I'm still about $100K ahead of where I would have been if my regular caddy would have made it to the tournament. That being said, I don't think Kuchar had any obligation to give him anything more and I don't hold it against him that he didn't. The guy was paid more than he probably makes in a year, knew what the agreement was before setting out, and got to live an experience of lifetime.

Too late now, Kuchar's in a no win situation. I do agree that Steinberg should've nipped this in the bud so to speak.

Also, Haney had an ex caddie on who caddied in the 70's when the winning purse was in the $40,000 dollar range. This guy caddied for Tom Purser. He has a friend who now caddies for a Hall of Famer. He says people would be surprised how cheap a lot of these guys are.

So Tiger's not the only cheap bastid out on Tour.

You still don't get it. This story is way beyond whether Kuchar's arrangement with the local caddie makes it a non issue / story, therefore nothing to see here, move on. You guys keep arguing the dispassionate facts, when in reality we're dealing with perception.

He has never won a major, hadn't won in 4 years and is still flogging things like Skecher shoes at his age, so maybe he feels he needs the money while he can still make it?
Or, as was quoted, he feels he was more than fair and the rest of the naysayers can suck it.
No biggie to me either way and doesn't change my previous lukewarm admiration for him

He's probably better off saying absolutely nothing for awhile or just politely reminding people that there was an agreement in place before the start of the tournament that he lived up to. Heck he probably could have hired another local caddy for even less money. The press has reported that those caddies can maybe make $200/day so Kuchar could have stood in front of a group of them and said "who will carry my bag for $500/day period" and probably one of them would have said yes.

You nailed (earlier) what this story is all about now (perception) and yet guys keep arguing the cold hard facts. Like I said before we're way beyond dispassionate facts. Who knows what the figure should've been, but a $1000.00 bonus looks cheap even hearing from the Kuchar defenders.

If I were Kuchar I'd hire a crisis management firm and see what they could come up with to minimize the damage already done. Basically do what Steinberg is being paid to do.

Kuchar's perception is not reality based. He says that there's no story here because he honored the agreement. The reality is the perception of him is taking a big hit. It'll be interesting if the "go suck it" attitude works in the long run. Maybe he should hire you as his PR guy.

I can hear your advice now. Any idiots thinking about boycotting Sketchers can go suck it !!! Any chants of Mooch, Mooch tell them to suck it also. The next local caddie I hire gets a $100.00 and a coupon to Tac Bell. Don't like it go suck it.

BTW, I like Kuchar. He's much more likeable than when he first came out on Tour and struggled. Maybe this couldn't have been avoided, but it certainly could've been handled better. Again, Steinberg gets some blame here IMO.

I don't see how Tiger has gotten away with it? I'm sure he has gotten away with many things, but since he is considered a cheapskate by the public that tells me that he HASN'T gotten away with it. A LOT of people hate Tiger. If he got away with more things then less people would hate him lol.

I am surprised Kuchar didn't get away with it. Maybe he didn't "get away with it" because most people don't golf and to them the story was just about a rich successful guy not paying a "fair" amount to a hard working class guy. Again, I don't think Kuchar did anything wrong....although I do think he may be a bit cheap....but evidently many people believe that he should have payed more. I think Tiger would be facing even more wrath given how much money he has compared to Kuchar. Tiger is hugely successful though and since he was already considered a cheapskate he could probably better survive it.....we would expect it from Tiger....we were shocked it was Kuchar. We aren't surprised that Sergio was destroying a green with his putter, but imagine if there was video of Kuchar doing that? It's just not how he was perceived to be.

eep hearing Kuchar "could've changed this guy's life" Why is it Kuchar's job to change his life? They say he makes $100 a day up to $200. At minimum that's $2000 a month up to say $3000. Not bad compared to average salaries in Mexico
