2016 US Open - Oakmont Discussion! (Spoilers)
- Edited
Love it or hate it the US Open certainly proves who the best player is that week. I like to see these guys struggle with a course once in awhile. While 20 under par is a fun to watch birdie fests they do get boring at times. Seeing a pro having to pitch out of the rough as we usually do is nice once a year.
Been watching live feed at work this morning. Mostly weather delay, but the mic is still on, so hearing a lot of rain shower noise.
Andrew Landy doesn't seem to mind the weather.
The name Matt Kuchar jumped out at me for no particular reason when I looked at the leaderboard.
It is amazing how long AND accurate Dustin Johnson is off the tee. Well, in the first two rounds, anyway.
Go DJ,waaaay overdue!
Gawd this place is dead.....
The "unknown" status of the penalty may bite him. Unfair in my opinion!
Agree the USGA is becoming too much of the story in golf lately....
If DJ said he didn't cause his ball to move that s/b good enough!
The vid seems to back him up also.
Even other players are saying it's a bunch of crap for an official to even say something to him til after the round.
The USGA president sounds like she's had a few too many chardonnays!
jamez
I agree, seems unfair to have a ruling decided by the official with the group only to hear that it is under review and will be ruled upon once again after the round is over. Does this mean a player could incur further penalties because a ruling can be overturned? The integrity of the game demands that a correct score card is too be signed after the round, then how is the integrity maintained if the USGA can change the score card after the round?
I guess Kuchar wasn't jumping out at me - just jumping.
I actually believe the USGA made the only fair interpretation of the rule. If the ball moves while the putter is skirting all around it, I think you generally should assume that movement of the club somehow caused movement of the ball. I understand that these particular greens are unbelievably fast and that may not actually be the case in this instance. It certainly doesn't look like the putter actually touched the ball in any way.
What I don't understand is the application of the rule in a case where the player clearly does not gain any advantage. If the ball had rolled forward or to the side (like to avoid a spike mark or some imperfection) it would be different. But a tenth of a turn straight back?
I was confused about the "line of sight" drop on 10. On the PGA Tour, a player get relief from the TIO and drops it there. In this case, they marked the spot where he had relief and then gave him two club lengths. In relief situations, you get one club length. In a penalty situation, you get two. I believe this "line of sight" is a condition and not a Rule. I did not know why he would get two club lengths.
The USGA has become a complete farce. They now need 300 yard par3's and greens so fast that there is no friction on them whatsoever to prevent unexplainable ball movement, to preserve "par."
What occurred yesterday is just one more example of an organization's incompetency. In 2014, in a cost-saving effort - they came up with the ingenious idea to have both the men and women play Pinehurst back-to-back weeks, giving the perceived "leftovers" and worn course conditions to the women, knowing full well that there was absolutely no equity in that decision.
The following year they conduct the Broccoli Greens Open at Chambers Bay, which was as absolute disaster that was salvaged only because of a climactic finish by DJ and Spieth. Worst course conditions going all the way back to the 1940's... how's that for Turf Grass research?! What a joke.
And, of course, the debacle that happened yesterday at Oakmont. WTF is the USGA doing? Better question - WTF are those of you who are still members doing still supporting them? Imagine telling Lebron James last night, 4th quarter against the Warriors in game 7 - "Lebron, we don't know what your team's score is, but we'll let you know when the game is over."
GTFO.
And I've not even started on the drunken speech given by the lady USGA President at the end. Seriously? Are you f**king kidding me, USGA? You're in charge of golf?
What a f**king joke!
End your membership today. Please. If you care about the game - take a stand. Otherwise, continue to allow the smug imperialists to drag this game down into the gutter with them.
Just my $.99
D.J. Had waited long enough.
After conquering the Sunday grind, he will win more tournament now.
Watch out world.
