Attitude is everything. If you're even tempered and well mannered in court, I'm sure nothing but lightening your wallet will be the end result. If you're cantankerous... about anything is possible.
I'm not sure why you don't get an attorney? I used one for a traffic offense many years ago. The end result ended up being about the same out of my pocket but I had peace of mind that I had an attorney and the offense was pushed down to a non moving violation that didn't affect my insurance. I was charged with 80 in a 65mph zone and was the 3rd car pulled over on Christmas Day traveling I94 in Wisconsin.
Your fine is potentially 500 bucks, and I'm going to guess you're going to pay the full fine and have the charges remain as so on your record, minus legal counsel. If you chose to hire an attorney you not only get immediate peace of mind, you can bet your fine and or charge will be reduced if not thrown out.
One potentially fun option is the arresting officer doesn't show up to court because he can't. My wife had a traffic ticket waived because at her court appearance the officer didn't show. An attorney can make it so the officer has no reason to show up in court thereby settling the matter without him needing to be there which he may or may not be. So, if you're really against an attorney you can just play roulette and see if he bothers showing up.
