  • PGA Tour to introduce walk up music for players

I guess we're officially there now, where pro golf feels the need to be like boxing/mma to appeal to the younger crowd.

PA-PLAYA like it or not, the Millennial generation controls the wealth / spending power now. Appeal to them or die is the basic business option.

Tough call. Just read a survey that found the average age golfer is 54. They want the millennials but they’re not getting them. Do you sell to the market you have now or struggle now hoping for the future.

        Tinker

Not a tough call at all, and I'd argue they have made the call already. Relaxed rules, relaxed attire, wifi, music, etc and more to come.
Its a dying, white, old man's game......500,000 golfers leave the game every year , mainly due to death or inability to continue physically. They need to and are going after a younger crowd.

DC300 is absolutely correct, they need to attract more young people and that means catering to their likes and needs which might be at odds with the stodgy , get off my lawn dinosaurs .

It's just some hype for the Ryder Cup type format for this tourny only.
Siilar to the 6 hole event the Euro Tour holds.

This tourny was going down the drain anyway, so they changed the format and are now trying to attract more people. It might work for them, if it doesn't rain, like it usually does there lol

It’s not about dinosaurs it’s about traditions that make a game what it is. If I’m pitching and a batter gets a hit and puts on a show you can bet the next time he comes up he’s gettin chin music. If I’m playing line backer and a guy catches a 5 yard pass and does a dance you can count on his head getting knock off the next time he comes over the middle. All sports, not just golf, are about the class associated with the game. Unfortunately most of it is getting lost to the detriment of the given game.

Reminds me of the annual trip my golf buds and I take to Gull Lake, Michigan. Every year we run into a group of young punks (we're 65-70 years old, so "young punks" could be a relative term!) who are "playing golf" in flip-flops with a boom box blaring music on each cart!! It looks like 1 or 2 of them can play golf and the others are just there to drink and horse around.....Pizzes me off every time I see them.

fatshot in moderation, it does not bother me and IMO, these kinds of guys represent a small minority of golfers. What I try to keep in mind is that although somewhat annoying, I'd like them to keep coming back. At some point they will stop wearing flip flops and blaring music and settle down. That's a scenario I'd prefer vs. them giving up the game, as not only is the course losing that 4some/group, they are likely losing any chance if their kids, etc. taking up the game and so on.

          fatshot

why does it bother you ? who cares if they are wearing flip flops.....blaring music sure that can be annoying it is when my neighbors kids blast their rap outside too but oh well.

as long as they are not damaging the course I am playing or slowing matters down, I don't give a rat ass what anybody else does on the course and I don't care what they think about what I do on the course. There was a thread a few years ago up here started by some old , crusty bastard who wanted somebody kicked off the course because he went pee in the bushes on a hole. In our younger days we would play "dick out" and I've seen guys walk up 18 fairway in their underwear after topping a drive.

if the management of the course has an issue and cares let them deal with it.

Golf is dying and needs to change ......its already happening whether we accept it or not. This event, The boisterous Waste Management Open, Top Golf, the new show Shotmakers, music and wifi on courses, phone chargers on all carts now etc....

its called progress and all businesses need to change and adapt to cater to what the target population wants. We see it everyday, you can do everything with an app now, I can order a beer and dinner to my seat at the hockey game and the theater now, hell I don't even have to go to the theater to see a new movie.

boomers have had a big voice based on our numbers but are dying off and leaving the game so there is now a focus on catering to a new target audience and what they want. I agree with Ode, the yahoos are small in number .....for now

I have no problem with it. Best walk up song ever was when Atlanta Braves player Brett Butler (early 1980's) came to the plate they played the Gone With The Wind theme song. Fantastic.

Guys can get clever with it. Maybe Paddy Reed will pick this one. 😎
