Our "Geezer Group" plays the senior tees. On weekends when I play with the young flat-bellies, I move back to the "middle tees. Our course has four sets of tees, Blue, White, Gold, and Red... from longest to shortest.
This year, three of our gold tees will move back close to the whites. Some of the holes used the same tee box for the gold and red while a tee box farther back was used for blue and white. The forward tee boxes on some holes are very small. As the number of retired geezers increased, those small boxes are seeing significant play. We play seven days/week while the young flat-bellies may only play on weekends. Moving the golds back to the bigger boxes will reduce the wear on those small ones.
Of course, some of our group are already upset even though we the new locations won't be put into place until March 1 when our handicap season begins. I like it! One... anything to protect the course is okay with me. Two... playing the senior tees with the rest of the geezers give me what I believe is an "ego handicap". I turn in every round during handicap season. So, the State golf association had me ending up last season as a 9. If I go to another course for competitive play I cannot play to a 9 against younger players from longer boxes. I don't believe I'm a single digit from typical middle tees. Will this be "sandbagging"? No! The course will be rerated and we'll see where that goes. If everything is equal, the 9 should remain. In my feeble mind, I see it escalating at least a couple of points.
Will be an interesting year listening to the griping and complaining. But... what else to old folks do??? :>)
