I downloaded the sheet and am making some assumptions.

1. I just fill in the length, head-weight and shaft weight (uncut?) and the rest is calculated.
2. The resulting MOI is the number I am trying to match to
3. I can manipulate head-weight or club-length to achieve matching
4. What is acceptable delta in MOI to consider them matched?
5. If I don't manipulated head-weight, then I use shaft length to get to target - this eliminates 1/2" increments and requires butt trimming to weird lengths like 36.723 inches.

Note - I added a delta column that calculates the % diff between MOIs of each club. The data below shows standard lengths for 3 - W, W2 and 7 gram increments in clubhead weight with a 125 gram uncut shaft. The MOIs are within 1% tolerance. Is that considered matched? Here are the column names for the sheet below.

One more thing. The quickest and easiest way to reach a MOI target is to manipulate head weight and length.

And it believed to be easier to do so by using 3/8 spacings instead of the usual 1/2

Now if you want stay on course with 1/2 increments and not fool with club lengths you might have to remove weight from the heads.

Cut shaft weight. Not uncut.
For example:
3 iron-Head weight= 239 grams
Shaft weight 110.1 grams(after tip and butt trimming)

You find your ideal club and match everything to within 1% of your ideal club. Manipulate head weight and shaft length to reach your target

You can remove the last 2 digits in the MOI row. It's overkill

I understand it better now - thanks so much. This formula/sheet allows me to pick a favorite base club (maybe 8 iron) and then match MOI to that by manipulating shaft length and head-weight up and down the set.

The perfectionist. I know a lot of clubmakers who build to much tighter specs than necessary "because I can". These are people who get a frequency meter that measures to 0.1cpm so they can do a better job of frequency matching. They get a digital swingweight scale not for the convenience, but so they can match swingweight to a tenth of a point. And they insist on aligning a spine if they can measure it -- and are often troubled if they can't detect it. To them I say, "If your time to do this is compensated, either by money or personal satisfaction, then it is worth it to you. But don't confuse 'because I can' with 'it matters in terms of tangible results'.

Interesting. I was doing "what-if" scenarios with the sheet and noticed that when I use .375 (3/8)" progression, the 1% delta tolerances tightened up even more. The numbers bear that theory out.
