  • Lexi Thompson Wins 1 Million Dollars and Vare Trophy!

I was rooting for Lexi but that was one of the worst looking passes at the ball I've ever seen, and I don't mean just by a pro. Pure choke job. It's going to take awhile to get over that one.

Par4QC You just have to be honest about it all, do you watch the LPGA? I don’t, I literally could not care less about it, that’s why it’s not paying big. Sport of any sort at a professional level is an entertainment production, the more people who watch, the more money available.

DC300 I watch every now and again, but not often enough to be considered a serious fan. They remind me of how good I might be (I hit the ball about the same distance as many of them) if I spent some time practicing and using course management. I saw, and cringed when I saw, Lexi miss that putt in the end yesterday. Glad for her that she was still able to get the Vare trophy despite that costly putt.

ode Absolutely! Her average driving distance is 30 yards more than mine and I probably have only hit a handful of drives in my life longer than her average.

johnnydoom and I don't mean it as a slight either (well maybe a little), she can really smash it! Will be interesting to see how she progresses with her short game as she gets older!

garyt1957 Putting was her weakness as an Amateur. Kept her from advancing in the U.S Girls Junior and U.S. Women's Amateur, more than once. Was a horrible putter. Better now, but it will happen again, as it does happen to the best occasionally.

I dunno, did tw or jack or ?? Miss two footers. IMO the term best or great gets tossed around far too much. Lexi is not great!

puttnfool You feel sorry for them because they earn a living playing golf?

No, I don't believe you're quoting him accurately. There was context in the statement. In the sentence prior he noted a male professional golfer of less 'stature' who was not nearly so successful (again, within a context) yet, had a bigger pay day.

Some folks believe the PGA is 'too' lucrative; that mediocrity is rewarded too much.

professor I didn't quote him. Simple fact is, they all have the same opportunities. The ladies earn what their skills demand.

When the LPGA tour gets to a decent percentage of the attendance of the PGA tour draws then you can start paying the gals more money. They just do not draw, where are you going to get the money. I feel they deserve more money also but you have to have the money ( i.e. sponsorship's and attendance ) to be able to pay them. It's a business.

RobertThomas That's what people either don't understand or don't wanna face up to. Everyone wants to scream "equality" and talk about how their feelings are hurt that they're not getting exactly what someone else is getting, but what they don't realize is they just don't have the skills, talent, etc. to get what they want. Simply put, they need to work harder.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I believe at least two tennis majors, The US Open and Wimbledon, have equalized the purses paid to men and women for those events. I do not follow tennis close enough to know the details but one argument was they could be sharing the allotted time blocks for television coverage and the events are running concurrently on different courts so in essence, same gate.

mikeintopeka if that's true, then I guess I'd agree. Easy problem to solve, though, just don't have the tournaments at the same time. USGA has that covered, I think.

puttnfool they don't realize is they just don't have the skills, talent, etc.

Yet, the poorest of the LPGA players could wipe your ass with your own shirt!!

                    Get real.

DC300 You just have to be honest about it all, do you watch the LPGA?

Absolutely! I've even stayed up late into the night watching their foreign tourneys, when they get broadcast. They play similar golf that we all do(or should)....smart golf. No trying fancy shots, no trying to outhit one another. Probably because they are playing for peanuts and need to make sure they score as low as they can in order to make a cut/cash a check.

Hell, yeah. No argument from me. Not sure where you pulled that from because I never said, implied, or insinuated that I was better than any of them.

You are the anomaly. The NBA vs the WNBA, the PGA vs LPGA, so on and so forth, wages are lower because the viewership is FAR lower. This dictates the sponsorship and therefore payout. TV sponsorship is a lot of it, as are major corporations.

There is very little interest in woman’s sports in general. This is not sexist, this is pure fact. Until there is a way to draw the viewers, the wages will be lower. Maybe they play a great fundamental game, but that doesn’t sell tickets to anybody outside of the purists. Golf has a small enough following as it is, that’s with the Mega stars on the PGA. I can’t name 20 female golfers on tour today and I’ll bet I know more than 99% of the world. The crazy shit Tiger could do, the shots Phil could create, the dominance of Jordan in his Major run, the international appeal and raw power of Rory all draw viewers. Getting up and down from the middle of the fairway isn’t all that fun. This is why the men get paid and the women don’t.

DC300 Yep. You could probably attribute the lack of viewer interest to a lot of things - maybe men watch more TV in general, I suspect they definitely watch more sports. Men at large probably don't like to watch women be better than them at something. The men who have watched the PGA for years don't necessarily have a hole in their lives that the LPGA fills.

The LPGA being dominated by Asian players probably has a lot to do with it in the USA as well.

Whatever the reason, the interest that drives ad sponsors just isn't there. Is a great product that no one wants to buy a great product?

I watch more LPGA than I do the PGA. I like it a lot better. I'm sure I'm in the minority, though.
