How many of you guys use graphite in your wedges?

OMG uses Aldila NV Multi 105 Graphite. I know several people have bought these and love them. I'm trying them out myself, even thinking about going with this shaft in my next set of irons.

In the past I didn't like graphite iron shafts, always felt too light. These may be lighter than my rifles but they just feel right. The control is there too, combined with the Tille head it's an incredible combo.

Well I have always tried to support Steve in his new companies and after seeing this wedge I was not too crazy about buying one. The course I play right now has crappy bunkers. The sand is dark heavy sand that is more like bare ground, but is it usually a little wet so it has a hard mud type feel. I wonder if this wedge would be a good wedge for these conditions. I still am not crazy about the looks, but if it does the job it does not matter to me how it looks.

letthebigdogshunt actually the 1st time I took these wedges out was to a local public course that has sand traps kinda similar to what you described, not hard ground but crappy. This one the sand looks like it's mixed in with dirt. I have had problems with my Alphas in these traps in the past. My first sand attempt with tille out there went easy. Much easier than I expected. A local friend bought a set from me and hit a birdie out of the rough. He was using graphite instead of steel like I was using. The wedge does what Steve says it will.

When you used it on the bad sand trap did you use it like a normal sand shot (open face with a slice swing) or just normal as if it were a shot out of a decent lie in the fairway? Does the head take a .370 shaft of .355? The reason I ask is if I do get one since it is BOGO I would get two 56* one for me and one for my wife. I would probably end up putting in her current shaft she is using in her wedge which is a lighter graphite shaft an old Snake Eyes from back when we were using Snake Eye wedges from GS.

I think OMG made great choices using the KBS Tour Steel Shaft and my new suprise favorite NV Multi 105. Both shafts work great, and I'm saying this after using Rifles for 8 years total.

What are your favorite wedge shafts?

cpanther1995 What are your favorite wedge shafts?

Harrison Stepless steel were my favs, after Rifle 6.0
I still have a couple of Mercury Savage steels in play as well.

Those Harrison Stepless shafts were nice.
I heard a rumor they were actually made by FST for Harrison. Don't know if that was true or not.

Spuzz I still have a couple of Mercury Savage steels in play as well.

Wow, a blast from the past. Mercury shafts were wonderful and best bang for the buck in their day.

Do you guys use the same flex in your wedges as in your irons, or do you go down a flex or up a flex?

I have always used the same shaft in all of my irons. I know various companies offer "wedge" shafts but I have never tried them. FST and KBS offer their Hi Rev steel wedge shafts that supposedly launch the ball higher with more spin.

Same Reg flex (as my irons) in my GW and LW and Stiff in the SW.

Using an 8 iron tipped shaft works the same.
It's not for me though, as I don't like wedge shots getting an extra boost if I happen to swing a bit harder than I want.

To me flex in wedges did not matter. I only hit my wedges inside 100 yards and then only half or three quarter swings. Most of time I use a wedge when I miss a green in regulation and I am hitting a chip or pitch inside 30 yards.

                8 days later

Well, one wet round in the books with these wedges, and here are some initial thoughts...

                1. Fugly factor, yes they are not the prettiest to look from the sole and back cavity position when in the golf bag compared to a traditional wedge. Based on the looks from the sole, they do look like an infomercial wedge (c3i, xe1). Having said that, when looking from the address position, they look beautiful (which is what is important). I loved the lighter chrome color and combined with the moderate topline and compact shape, they look really nice! I was in the golf store the other day drooling over the Ping i200s and these OMG wedges looked very similar at address. Despite the wide sole, you cannot see any of the cavity in the normal address position unless you purposely de-loft. One thing I should mention, I am wondering about the quality control of these wedges. I remember hearing that these wedges were heavy not sure of the specs but I'm guessing the weights were a bit off in my wedges - the 56 deg head was at 308gram and the 52 was at 312 grams. I know typically sand wedges are around 300 grams, so even if these are supposed to be heavier, the 52 would likely be a bit lighter than the 56 normally right, unless they were designed to be the same headweight? Not a big deal though as I am not that sensitive to headweight.

                2. Performance - I do the majority of chipping around the green with my sand wedge and generally only use my gap or PW if I need to hit a longer/lower chip or don't feel comfortable with the lie. I would say overall, I was quite impressed with the 56 deg chipping. I chunked a few chips but this is normal for me, especially in the wetter course conditions but overall had a better round than my previous round with my glide wedges. Whether it was all me or the OMG wedges saved me a couple of times where the glides didn't, I am not sure - more time needed. I couldn't really gauge spin and check as I was using mostly distance balls and with wet fairways and greens, roll is limited anyways. Again, more time is needed but I am encouraged as there were a couple chips where the ball seemed to stop a bit sooner than I expected. I believe I only had a handful of full wedge shots during my round, just one of those days where I either had lots of 9 irons and PW or shots less than 80 yards into the green so not a lot of full gap and sand wedges. Of the ones that I did have, I unfortunately pulled a few of them left but this may have also been the shafts. I was using some apollo shafts and wonder if I didn't trim them enough especially considering the extra weight of these wedges. If I'm not careful, I tend to pull my wedges anyways, so I'm sure it was a combination of this and maybe a shaft that was a bit soft and not really anything to do with the heads themselves. I did have a few shots 3/4 shots in the 70-80 yard range and they worked out perfect. Again, looking down at them, they look great and they performed perfectly aside from the pulled shots - contact and distance were good on the pulled shots, just bad direction. I guess the only thing that I didn't like was remembering to remove the mud from the soles, especially after a practice shot. Usually, you just need to give the faces a quick wipe but with these you have to do a bit more work with the removal as the dirt stays in the rails in the sole. Probably only a problem in wetter conditions, but still, a bit of a PITA but oh well, as long as they perform, I don't mind.

So that's about it! Overall, a great wedge with encouraging results. I love my ping glides but would not be surprised if these guys replace them. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend these at all as they performed for me in the wet conditions of vancouver, bc. After, I have a few more rounds I'll post an updated review. I am also very interested to see how they perform in the dry, summer conditions but this will have to wait for a while ☹

Thanks for the review, glad you like them. They are awesome wedges.

Back to the shaft conversation from before Thanksgiving. If you want special KBS Tour tipping for your OMG wedges when ordering let me know. For example if you play regular but want stiff tipped like an 8 iron no problem. Whatever special tipping you want or custom length we can do. No special tipping on the Aldila NV shafts, they are butt trim only. Special lengths are available though.

If you are a club builder send me a private duscussion or email me at cpanther1995@gmail.com we can talk about options.

Whatever you want we can do.

I just got mine form Rick cpanther1995, got the two for one deal. Took the wedge out last Wednesday when we had really wet conditions. Out on a close to muddy sand trap I dropped three balls. Now these traps are bad even went dry some of the worse I have ever played and the ball just comes out as it I was hitting off the fairway with a great lie. During the round I hit some off very wet sloppy lies and again it was like summer time, the ball just rose up high and dropped soft a couple times with a little draw back. Dropped one in the thick wet rough where I could barely see the ball and the darn wedge again just threw it out like it was nothing. Amazing so far.

Followed up that round Friday after two days of rain and of course the whole course was sopping wet. Had some trouble hitting normal shots because of the conditions, but again when I used the wedge there was no problem. Really surprised how well this thing works. While the looks of the sole is different it is what makes this thing work so well. There are two things about the wedge though. It is heavier feeling than my regular wedges and because the ball comes out with a nice high angle it does not go as far as my regular wedge. Perhaps with a stiffer tipped wedge it might work better if you don't like the higher flight. I played yesterday (Monday) and made an adjustment in my normal shots inside 50 yards and it worked great. Hit a couple shots to gimmie range from that distance.

All in all if you like the heft of a heavier wedge and getting the ball out of bad lies in the bunker, fairway and rough with ease this is a great tool to do it. All in all I would give this wedge an A as if does some things I wish my wedge would do. I have been playing Wishon wedges for years and I could not get out with a normal bunker swing. I did not have to use a sand trap shot to get the ball out just a normal from the fairway swing like with any iron. Steve Almo has been talking about doing a wedge for years and I wish he had done it back then. Thanks Steve and OMG.
