The "spirit" of that collision is that basketball is supposed to be non contact the same way driving down the street is.
If you run into a car that's already occupying a space, like a car stopped at a red light, you're at fault (you've committed a foul.) I'm basketball, that's an offensive foul or a "charge."
But if you're going straight and a car tries to turn into your lane and you hit it, the other driver is at fault. You had a right to that space. That's a defensive foul.
It's murky and subjective, and it happens so fast in real time that almost everything gets called as defensive (blocking) foul. I hate that aspect of the game too, but I have a buddy who thinks there should be no offensive fouls called ever. I think he's a fool for that.
Could probably call a foul on every play. It's the ugliest part of basketball for sure. But without it, it'd look like no one was trying on defense. It's really not hard to score in basketball if the defender isn't making contact.
