Got teamed up with a father who was just riding along and his two sons who were 25-30. They are both playing the tips on a 7194 yard course. 74.5/140. They look athletic but I'm dreading the 5 hour round. The one guy rips one 330 yards off the first tee, measured by me! Longest I've ever seen anyone hit a ball. The brother is 270ish. He had a more controlled swing but still drove a 310 yard green and hit a couple more 300.
The other guy was the one to watch though. I measured 3 more drives at 330. Funny thing was, I beat him by 40 shots! And that's not an exaggeration. I shot mid 80's and he shot mid 120's. I actually counted his strokes on the first few holes and he went 8-8-7-4 (par3)-8. He would skull every chip shot across the green and then 3 or 4 putt. He literally missed multiple putts from 18". I tried to give them to him but he would putt them.
When he missed, it was an off the planet slice. I wish I had asked him if he was ever fitted. His dad said he didn't play much golf so I doubt it. He hit absolute moon balls but not in a good way. His brother hit it way up there too but still piercing. This guy's shots looked like a wedge, but a 300 yard wedge, and almost every one had a big tail. I'd bet he was leaving 20-50 yards on the table if he got fitted. I should have asked what he was playing re loft, shaft, etc. He was likely playing off the rack 10.5* maybe stiff or X.
Last hole he finally hit one straight with no tail. I was expecting that one to go 350 easy but we couldn't find it. Best drive he hit and we couldn't find it. Oh, and he was playing cheap Wilson ball with an occasional unknown blue ball thrown in.
Get this dude a ball fit for him alongside a fitted driver, something probably lower loft , and a little work to straighten things out and he had long drive potential.
KCEE's post about the guy who couldn't putt reminded me of this guy
