There’s nothing illegal about it. I’m a Red Sox fan… would have been nice if an MIT guy would have helped out the home team here though😂.

Bats have a length and width rule and these comply… no argument.

NEW YORK — It’s not the wand. It’s the wizard. Or, well, maybe it’s both.

One thing is certain: The New York Yankees are not cheating. They are not breaking — or even bending — the rules. Their so-called “torpedo bats” that have gone viral in recent days are completely legal. In fact, a handful of other players around the league used the oddly shaped bats over MLB’s opening weekend. That number will almost certainly rise in the coming days.

This is what analytics get you - bats tailor-made to have the most mass where you typically hit the ball. The batter's equivalent to the analytics in defensive positioning that has lead to a drop in averages, although it'll probably have a much less effect.
In our universe, it really is no different than getting golf clubs fit for you.

Sneakylong Was there not already more wood in the barrel of the bat? I believe that’s why it was called the barrel. I’m a Yankee fan but I can barely stand baseball anymore. Home run or strikeout. The Yankees had 5 errors that game, too bad the MIT guy can’t also make a glove 🤦‍♂️

professor Isn't it Ironic that Deflate Gate apologist posts about a new and highly questionable product? Doesn't MLB have standards and criterion for the parameters of bats? LOL
Any Red Sox fans in this thread?

Not questionable at all. For now. Meets the criteria for MLB. Now if everyone adopts this new bat and homeruns start flying out of ball parks like crazy then they'll probably take a look at it.

Kind of like the belly and broomstick putters. They didn't have a problem with them until they started winning Majors.

Deflategate??? Really??? They went on to win that game 45-7. That was in 2015. Brady went on to win a lot more games after that. Try to come up with something a little more analogous than that bullshit. lol

I wonder if moving the mass closer to the handle will make outside pitches more effective. Then batters are going to stand closer to the plate and get clocked by pitches.

        johnnydoom

several hitters and pitchers quoted in articles have made that point - less mass at end of barrel = worse contact on pitches away

Next thing will be to have "fittings." They'll tailor where the fat part is to where each player hits the ball most times.

        (see's thread title)
        Ohhhh bats!
        (opens thread)
        Damn

        Sneakylong An MIT Physicist

Why did it take a physicist to figure this out?

“Really,” he said. “It’s just about making the bat as heavy and as fat as possible in the area where you’re trying to do damage on the baseball.”
