ode Good question. I don't know if it ever goes away because of what it has done to the spreads at the upper and lower ends of the loft ranges. In a vacuum, I wouldn't care much if my 27 degree club says 5 or 6 or 7. But when it says 7, and so they use 5 or 6 degree spreads from say 8 iron on down, then I care about loft jacking.

Unless they finally break down and offer 2 gap wedges, like Titleist has done with their SGI irons. Even then, they have 5 & then 6 degree spreads starting at 9 iron.

So overall I think it's dumb. There is nothing stopping them from calling their hot 27 degree, 37.5" iron a 5 iron, except for the distance race. When they decide to call it a 7 iron, it messes with the set makeup. And at this point, there's no going back, so maybe you'll see the term die out.

DonM I suppose there could also be an ulterior motive for the OEMs to make these iron lofts as strong and workable as possible. It has all but eliminated the 3i & 4i in a lot of sets. And what if you still want those 18/20clubs?
Well, just buy a $300 hybrid!! Easy fix. And (probably) twice the profit of a single iron.

My Callaway Smoke HL irons have 2 wedges....AW & GW. And I kick myself for getting both as there is no need for both of those lofts. Unless one insists on making 100% full swings with every club. Even then, I do not see much yardage diff in them, from my full swings. YMMV

DonM 27 degree, 37.5" iron a 5 iron

That's not even a 6i now.

The Sim2 Max set I just sold had a 21.5, 38.25", 5i.
And the kid that bought them is just going crazy over being able to hit 220-230 consistently whereas he was only getting 190 from his previous 4i.....which is only around 24.
What he doesn't know, won't hurt him I guess....that short 3i he's got now.😆

DonM agreed the spread on both ends is where things get fubar. I personally don't mind 4 or 5 * .... Typical set GW is now 48, that is fine as stand alone come in 52 and 50 is readily available! Not an issue. I play the set PW and GW typically at the same weight/length. I would still prefer to cut out one wedge and have the set GW at 50-52.....but that is more of a rarity. Iv never found an issue on the other end as I'm quickly transitioning to a hybrid or utility iron past 30 * so it's a non issue. The biggest difference is that utility/hybrid tends to be lighter and longer and figuring that out has been a chore, as well as find suitable higher lofted utilities and/or hybrids. My 27 * hybrid is 38.75" and my 32 * 7i is 37.25".....there is a half club gap but I don't see it as a thing.

Typhoon I'd say players should be allowed to carry as many as they want, but that would probably slow some people up even more. Let me laser than pin from 40 yards out and then search for that special infomercial wedge that I left just off the green 2 holes back. 😡

Loft-jacking doesn't fix your swing.
If you have a solid swing, you don't need jacked lofts
Ergo, loft-jacking is dumb.

Irons #5, #6, #7,...

I'm so psychorigid that with jacked lofts I would feel the need to put headcovers on them as well with the 'right number'.

I remember seeing a video with Steve Elkington several years ago. He was playing golf with an amateur. Think it was a woman.

Anyway, the thing he kept saying was don’t get caught up with the number on the bottom of the club. Look at the club as a tool.

Pick the right ‘tool’ for the shot in front of you. Loft jacking is a non issue if you think of it that way.

This says it all. ^^^^^ For some reason many disregard the above and think the club manufacturers are just bending the lofts stronger without considering the above.

When I fit somebody if funny how all they care about is how far the ball went, not how much more accurate they were. Most times I give up… “yeah, great… you need to buy it🙄”

I don’t remember people complaining about “loft up” for driver….

sdandrea1 exactly. I trust Golfworks as it relates cg as they publish ACTUAL data on ALL of their designs, as well as other manufacturers who provide them the sticks to test. OEM's can say these clubs have lower cg/vcog, but show me the data that supports it. What do we get from them, mostly marketing! Who was it that went on a 17/1700 campaign🤔....🤮

I remember so many guys refusing to loft up no matter if a 12* driver gave them +20 yards. "I've always used 9.5*!". They weren't going to use an "R" flex shaft either.....playing in jeans and a t-shirt was ok though because they weren't totally purists about the game's traditions 🤣

Typhoon When it comes right down to it, none of that matters.....loft, shaft stiffness, ball used, etc..

It's all in the way you hold your mouth/set your jaw during the swing.
