johnnydoom I guess that made an impression on you and perhaps many others. I don't remember what Norman said, what Faldo said, or what others were saying. I remember in general that a big lead was lost and I don't remember the details of play or conversation now other than I think one short approach shot went something like 40 yards right of the green. In the end I came away with respect for Faldo for not throwing in the towel when it looked like he was beat. I don't know what facing the reporters accomplished. It's not like Norman committed some moral injustice by losing and needed to make atonement to those that were offended.

Personally, I have no interest in what Rory might have said. But it's sports tradition, win or lose you face the press. In some sports it's mandated. To not do so is chickenshit and it's not a good look.

It may be a recent media tradition, I don't consider it a sports tradition at all. You lose in the game, there is no reason to have to face the press. What have you done wrong besides lose a competition? I guess people just like to enjoy watching others bleed. The winner has every reason to celebrate and to want as many to join them in the celebration as will, but the loser doesn't have that want unless its just cathartic to them in some weird way to unload their thoughts. The public just has a lust for blood. More of an indictment of the public than a test of a competitor's character.

It's been going on for 30 years or more. I assume Arnie and Jack did it. I just watched Luka Doncic sit up there after losing the NBA Finals last night and answer questions. They were dumb questions and boring answers but he did it.
Personally I couldn't care less to hear the losers or the winners because it's usually cliche'd crap that you get either way , but it IS tradition and if you don't do it you know you're going to get roasted for it as Rory has been.

Congratulating the winner is also a "tradition", especially by the second place guy.
PGA Tour is all about tradition and legacy, supposedly.

I'm squarely in the or not. If they signed a contract that says they must make an appearance after losing then fine. But I don't really care about it. I have little desire to watch and listen to someone who is forced to torture themselves in front of me for my entertainment. It's not edifying, it's not enlightening, and it's not entertaining. I suppose somewhere there's a metric that says they get a bigger audience by having the losers in front of the cameras. I suspect deep down there is some satisfaction from fans of the winner by extending the loser's participation in the loss.

I agree. He’s as talented as it gets. How ironic that it’s his putting that has been his Achilles heel and he sunk some bombs on Sunday, but missed two short putts to lose the tournament.

He’s only 35 and will be in the hunt at more Majors. Phil Mickelson didn’t win his first of 5 Majors until he was 34. 12 years after turning pro.

Rory blew a 4 shot lead in the 2011 Masters, but in the very next Major he won the 2011 U.S. Open by 8 shots. I’ll be picking Rory in The Open.

Spuzz He should have found a way to stay and congratulate Bryson in person. I don't know how true it is, but there's a story out there that a Netflix film crew followed Rory into the champions locker room and basically chased him out of there.

Yes. That's my opinion too, but only because that's what I would have done. I can't expect others to embrace my virtues (or ho-ing fetishes). It just seems like the right thing to do (the staying after......not the ho-ing).

Rickie Fowler may never win a major. But you can take it to the bank that had he been in the hunt Sunday, choked coming down the stretch (like he has numerous times) he still would've hung around long enough to congratulate the winner.
