Had a local state policeman do that several years ago, in this area. The driver took off and the cop jumped and stuck his arm inside the car and hung on. For a while, until he fell and was smashed to bits.
Driver is now serving, iirc, 60 years, no parole.
And they've dedicated the bridge in the cop's name.
