johnnydoom I didn't when they first announced it, but that was because I wasn't forward thinking enough to envision the equalizing properties of the NIL policy.

Same. The 12 team playoff has suddenly become more appealing to me with more parity in college football.

propman I appreciate schools that make a honest attempt at upholding academics, ie Duke, Northwestern, Stanford etc...

I'd question that. Only because I don't know - so just questioning. Duke Hoops and academics? Struggling with that.

professor it's all relative as I've heard Wisco has tougher standards then some. At this point it's a joke with NIL....just consider them clubs affiliated with the school, have a code of conduct to follow and let "student' athlete know if they actually want to get an education with the University at some point it's free or at least commensurate with how many years they were on the team!

professor Duke has higher admission standards than most schools, for sure. It hurt them in the portal because they will only accept certain credits from other universities. That's why they mostly went after grad students in the portal.

Their backers have been begging the school to relax the standards in terms of allowing credits from other schools so that they can remain competitive in the new landscape of college athletics, but they are refusing to budge so far.

In other words, you can be skeptical all you want, but as of now Duke is definitely maintaining a higher academic standard than any other school in the top 25.

ode it's all relative as I've heard Wisco has tougher standards then some.

That's basically true but the student/athletes get many advantages tutoring, training table meals, diets followed etal that other students don't get. Most atheistic teams at the university have early morning practices during their season and also hitting the weight rooms while other students are fast asleep in their beds. There are also many grant aided students so a a student can garner outside tuition money if they can hit the books and maintain a certain GPA. There is some effort that the modern athlete puts in white others are ignorant of the effort.

Back in my day majority of Wisconsin university system throughout the state offered all those that wanted to gain higher education the ability to go to school at a reasonable tuition and not carry huge education debt. Not so today. I used the GI Bill after Vietnam and worked a few years saving money to go to UW and still had 2 side jobs while going to school. I had no education debt and parents did not help out with tuition. My parents both went to UW-LaCrosse and graduated with same means and no education debt. Different times and different situations but still students today can rack up huge education debt.

Good luck to Braedon Locke and Tyler Van Dyke last years UW QB's who hit the portal this week. They can see the handwriting on the wall as to new OC Jeff Grimes and moving to a more pro set offense. Locke is a non-running QB and would not thrive in UW's offensive schemes. Nowadays most college football programs need a dual threat QB.

NIL and portal have completely changed the college scene.

The "new" system of ratings and bowl selection (including national championship) has created an infinitley wide arena for endless debates and criticism. I wish I could buy stock in endless debates and criticism.

I’m of the mind that first round Tennessee vs Ohio State might be the best game of playoff. Apparently Ohio State is over a touchdown favorite, but Tennessee is a very physical team.

              sdandrea1 I wish I could buy stock

This is touching on something I read a couple days ago.

College sports teams(esp. football) are/have been/will be 'sold', much like Pro teams. New owners only get 51% though. Now, when teams will be bought in the$50M-100M ranges, do we think there will be any outside influences on the polls/ratings?
I'm sure it won't on the playoff setups.🤣😂

johnnydoom wild in my book that Ohio St. is favored by that much. Gonna be interesting to see Tennessee D line vs Ohio St. O line. Strength vs. Weakness, whether that is actual or perceived🤔

rsvman2 are refusing to budge so far. ...

Well, that's good to hear! It's not like major college football was the bastion of academics - even before the portal and NIL. (I like the portal, it's good for more kids to get playing time instead of 95 man rosters. I'm also familiar with how different schools "promote" their image (not necessarily Duke). Just learned through personal experience from a gal who worked for me and had graduated from Penn State, one of those schools that would report great percentages of graduates. She'd picked-up a job as a student tutor. She'd write papers and take exams for players. Yes, anecdotal but she'd had no reason to make this disclosure as she just love PSU. I'm pretty sure this goes on at many a school. Hell, when I was at Pitt for undergrad '77-81 I'd skip football games to work additional shifts at a gas station, parking cars on game day. We stopped pumping gas. It was amazing to see players, from poor home regions (who'd become future stars in the NFL), parking their Eldorado's and the like. Hmmm... that was before NIL. LOL

                  scotts33

Lived a very similar lifestyle. Don't regret it and managed to pay my way through without any debt. (It did cost, what 15-20% of tuition rates these days.
And, man do universities crush international students! Typically they pay 3X's the norm.

When I see Belichik standing on the NC sidelines, at a game, as head coach, I'll believe it. Until then, I just can't get my head around it.

                    sdandrea1

Early on, I attended UNC for a couple of years. I'm still not sure what to think about Belichik's arrival. 😳

50 million over 5 years. Belichik.

ode Tennessee's offense, other than running back Dylan Sampson who is terrific, is very erratic. But the defense is reliably solid so Ohio St. better bring a great game plan. Ohio St. may cream them at home for all I know, but I don't expect Tennessee to be an easy game for any team.
