DonM I thought exactly the same thing as Customgolfcenter when I stumbled across the SMT iron heads again. More like SMT than TM… almost exact copy.

Par4QC The Kirkland and SMT 579 heads and nearly 100% identical from what I can tell looking at the photos, and also identical to an open-foundry model from Xiamen Jasde who produces heads for many different DTC brands (including SMT & Sub70). I'll have to get my hands on them to confirm (should be arriving tomorrow!). But they are both poon-filled hollow-bodied heads, and the specs are all within +/-1° for loft & lie and less than 1mm for offset, which could have either been fudged on the spec sheet (while still within factory tolerances) just to make them "different" on paper. Or they could have made slight tweaks to the specs since they obviously had their own molds made with their branding.

Specs similar not same. Doubt they are the same, but? They all look similar to me. Do ya:ll got the sweats for not pulling the trigger 😂. Gotta love the hollow filled ~~garbage~~ selling out in record time. Hahaha

Not me. I have a set of forged iron & wedge heads/shafts coming in from @LogicalOne that was less costly.

I'm sure the foundry can alter the specs a little. Whatever, they are some kind of open design. It would be cool to see a set in person and see if the quality is there. Sometimes these cheap foundries don't have the best QC.

That's not what I'm seeing when reading about both items. 1 is just hollow, the other has foam/urethane filler.
1 of them is going to (may)be loud and feel clunky. 🤔

Correct. You’ll often see Justin on their heads, because Xiamen Justin Sports Equipment and Jasde are like two of the same.

DonM I have built several sets, haven't actually hit them myself though. And I don't have any on-hand at the moment, but maybe I'll see if I can have DTG send me a #7 iron head in my next shipment so I can do a direct side by side comparison.

Par4QC The SMT is definitely urethane-filled as well. The SMT 579 is without a doubt the "Justin" irons from Xiamen Jasde, as they make all of the SMT/Sub70/DiamondTour stuff and the designs are identical. They both have a 431 stainless body w/forged 455 Carpenter steel shaft, hollow-body urethane-filled head, toe screw in the end, 100% identical specs, etc.

The only question is, are the Kirklands also based off that same design? Well, according to a recent "insider" who posted on Reddit - that answer is most likely, yes. Albeit, with some slight tweaks (such as the .355 hosel, a tungsten weight insert - which the Justin/SMT irons make no mention of, slightly different loft & offset specs, etc).

Kirkland description: "injected urethane insert"
Justin description: "filled with flexible polyurethane foam"

So apparently one uses "foam", while the other uses "urethane", while the other uses "polyurethane foam". So they most likely all use the same thing, I doubt either company came up with their own special filler.

So here’s what I sorta don’t get. Would you spend $499 for that set of irons if it said “Walmart” or Kmart, or Target on the back?

Even worse is that people are reselling them for over $1000 today because they ran out. WTF?? It’s a department store item… private label… it’s like going to Sam’s club and buying Sam’s cola.

Exactly … well to a point. OEM’s you expect better quality and tolerances. At least that’s the thought. What I’m saying Rex is what is Kirkland? It’s a name… a private label department store name. Would you buy up every set available if it’s were sold at Walmart and said Walmart on the back. And then would you turn around and think someone would spend over $1000 for irons that said Walmart on them? That’s all…. Yup… what’s in a name… Walmart irons.

Sam’s Cola vs Coca Cola… both are in the same 2 liter package, both have a red label with white writing. Sams cola is half the price …. Why aren’t people beating the doors down for Sams cola… it’s only a name

If I were to buy non oem, I’d go with something more respectable like Kelly’s stuff, SMT, Alpha…. Something with a golf background… not an iron that has the same logo as my underwear.

I get the excitement for the balls and gloves as they are a good deal, but I don't get it with the clubs. If you know golf then you know you can get some nice poon filled irons from Golfworks, Sub70, Takomo, etc. If you don't know golf then you probably want a name brand or you just keep playing your 25 year old clubs.
