Spuzz Meronk has been up and down. He's really good when he's on, not so much when he's off.
He won earlier on the Ryder course which should have given him an inside track, imo, but didn't follow it up. Next time for him I think.
The impression that I get is that Meronk is the sort of player who probably wouldn't be viable in foursomes because of that inconsistency - while it's possible for a team to carry one player like that, it does limit the captain's options.

Yes, there were fewer captain's picks in previous years (mostly 2 on the US side and 3 for Europe, but with some variation - this Golf.com article is a little out of date, but lists the picks on both sides between 1979 and 2016. Steve Stricker did have 6 picks for the 2021 team, though, which seemed to work out pretty well...
