I like both and although the P&R forum has been quiet at FGI for some time it used to be my favorite forum. Both sites are time killers for me and they both work pretty well in that regard.

I hope it's possible to avoid a P&R section... but I've seen a few threads already here that would head straight to a typical P&R argument if people responded... Avoiding P&R takes the cooperation of ~EVERYONE~. Not bringing up gun violence, terrorism, various religions, the election, left versus right, will take a huge amount of willpower for some people. I certainly hope it can be done, but I won't hold my breath.

And who's going to tell those P&Rers to stfu when they go there? Is that Ramers' job?

If there is no P&R section then P&R topics should not be posted.
I just asked them to stop.
Others who don't want a P&R section PLEASE post in those threads also asking them to stop. Therefore, JRock has more evidence to support we don't want to go that route.

I agree. I might go even further in suggesting that those who purposely bait others into P&R discussions be shown the door after two warnings.

Much too often these divisive discussions bleed over into the clubhouse, and it adds to the workload of the moderators to control it. Why not just nip it in the bud right out of the gate and make an attempt to keep this place somewhat friendly?

If people want to talk politics and religion - there are several thousand message boards already in existence that offer those topics exclusively. I honestly see no need for it on a "golf" message board. I would wager a guess that a majority of people don't want it. Take a vote if you must - count me in already as a "nay" if you decide to.

This very thread is an issue thread. No one has politicized it and it doesn't seem to conflict with you so it's not an "other people's issue" in your mind.

Sorry, that some things offend people. If you can control yourself things should never get out of control. Control YOURSELF...all issues solved.

brsmith I think P&R was a mistake with the old FGI. I never was in it, but bad feelings and ill will spilled over to the rest of the forum.

To be historically accurate, the "bad feelings and ill will" first existed in FGI's Clubhouse Forum which originally was open to political posts. FGI's head honchos subsequently decided to create the Politics and Religion Forum to separate that stuff from the Clubhouse.

You are right about the timeline, but then, when topics would go bad in P&R, the backlash would leak back into the forums where members would fight with each other.

I just want to fully comprehend this. So, ANY issue that could remotely be labeled as "political" should be avoided in the clubhouse? If that's the case, you're going to open up another can of worms about who is determining what is and isn't political. IE: Fantasy Football has now become a political issue because of the litigation and popularity of it. So, no talk of fantasy football because it's become such a hot button thing, now?

In the thread in question there has been no talk along party lines, period, leaving it to an issue not a political issue.

I'm in total agreement with no threads about the President this, the President that... Republican this, Democrat that. Those are clearly political threads. Turning on your TV or opening your browser to see another mass shooting is not a political issue. It's an issue, period. I started the Uber driver thread. That one was completely apolitical and thus fine. This new one...was about a phrase heard after another mass shooting. It has nothing to do with my personal politics as I'm almost 100% apolitical.

The one thing that CAN and SHOULD be done is to be CIVIL which has been mentioned in the expectations here. One should be able to even talk PandR CIVILLY without having to have any kind of warning. However, that is just simply pollyanna thinking as there are too many who take this to levels of insult and name calling which is in violation to the spirit desired to be created here. The topic isn't the issue...it's the people discussing it! Give me liberty! 🙂

🙂 I love a good discussion about anything. Sadly, groupthink is going to come into play here I'm afraid. If I had to choose, I would choose the liberty of discussing anything but that isn't what's going to rule the day, here.

There has to be a line when people are unable to act appropriately. Applied to that now closed thread and the entire mentality of this forum and everything else in life. Liberty can't exist without conditions save for anarchy.

I agreed with the closure of the other thread. It was no longer a civil discussion. The "converted" FGI forum seems to be wide open, just see the languge thread, perhaps that is a better venue for those types of"discussions".

I can't say I disagree with the closing of the thread I started, either. I'm just saddened as an adult that we aren't able to talk about issues however you wish to label them without violating someone's sense of offense. I wasn't sure if the topic offended PA Playa or if the responses in it did.

This forum is going to be awfully vanilla if we can't talk about anything that might offend someone else. Heck, you can get just as nasty in a JDM vs. OEM thread as you could in a thread labeled political so it's really about how YOU handle YOURSELF. That is, has been, and will always be the issue. Not the banning and locking and censoring that goes on around it.

I'll just blah myself out here and will probably just be a very infrequent contributor so I don't offend people's sensibilities here. Ostentation is much more the order of the day which I find far more childish than some of the behaviors you could find in a thread someone says they don't like.

Absolutely. FGI compliments that type of topic discussion. I can appreciate J-rock wanting to gain as many members here as he can. And... last I checked - it cost me nothing to join here! Who am I to go into someone else's house and tell them to change the freaking drapes and carpet? It's not my right, nor is it my privilege to expect him to.

Justin knows what went on at the other place, the agendas, the motives, the bickering. I would hate to see this place deteriorate to that same level where people just no longer feel like it's worth checking in here. Civility isn't as simple as asking people to abide by rules. I've yet to see a civil P&R discussion on the internet.

And like I said - there are places already in existence to scratch that itch for those who want it. I don't want to see it here, and I'm not alone in that opinion.

The language thread was just for fun, to post a bunch of profanity simply because "we can." Many smileys were used. The novelty seemed to wear off pretty quickly.

Predictable the way it would evolve. Didn't read it and have no intentions of doing so regardless of the denials by some that it was or would become political.
Thanks JRock. It sets the tone of what YOU and we as a membership prefer.
For those who take offense, resent it, don't understand it, every forum has its tone and demeanor. If you don't buy into it, then there is some place where you will feel more comfortable.
Better yet, try creating your own forum and see what a PITA it is.

You and I are in agreement as to shutting down topics that got out of hand. I think the minute name calling has to be resorted to that that post should be removed and the topic left alone.

Here's where I'm at... I just read someone here type that they felt they needed to post more topics to get discussion going over here. I happen to agree that there is a dearth of interesting things to discuss here right now. I purposely have restrained myself due to the experience at the old FGI. I can come across however I choose and I decided dialing it down considerably would be a good thing. After reading the post about someone feeling they needed to get this place rocking, I decided to post something I knew would bring some good debate while remaining civil, personally, or so I felt but I see that has been judged to not be the case.

A great forum topic should be like a vegas gambling line, imo. You should have equal opinions on each side. A topic that evokes nothing from the membership here is worthless and is just taking up space.

In my opinion, the ideal of not trying to be the old forum is pie in the sky. The only way to be that is for you to identify ALL the people you felt made the place as intolerable as you claim it was and remove them. Of course, I know that I am one of them. I think in order for this place to be what you want EVERYONE needs to take a look at themselves and determine whether they really belong here. If you are one who is always prone to have to apologize for your actions that is a litmus that you probably don't because the best indicator of future behavior is past behavior.

There is groupthink that takes hold of forums and homogenizes them. Kind of like the Borg collective on StarTrek or the wives of Stepford. It is a fact that that is what some people desire. I do not and as I can see that this is what is desired from the majority, I will be the first to voluntarily ban myself here I don't wish to be completely vanilla all the time and know that I won't. As I said above, though, ostentation is a much bigger issue but that goes unfettered here because people are okay with that.
