OK, I'll try. The 3-way light switch has a box on the back. There are 4 holes where you can stick wires directly in, OR you can attach the wires to screws on the sides of the box. 3 of the screws connect directly to the places where you stick in wires. The 4th hole however, does not have a direct screw, it has on the side instead a screw connected to the metal frame surrounding the box (used to ground the circuit.
So, when I removed the wires from the holes, electing to use the screws instead in the new box, I connected the 4th hole wire to the ground screw. And on the 2nd light switch, my 4th hole wire broke out of the hole, so I also connected that wire to ground. Electrician says that our light switches don't use the ground screw at all - the 4th hole was just the connector from the switches to the lights, and I had effectively grounded both switches so nothing worked.
