My list of horror movies watched would be pretty small. I don't care for them, at least not since I was in grade school.

Loved horror movies as a kid. Every Saturday night one of the cable channels (either ch. 38 or 56) had Creature Feature. These were the 60’s with the Twilight Zone and Outer Limits on TV as well.

The first really scary movie I saw was Psycho. Think I was ~ 6 years old. My grandfather owned a drugstore back then that was right next door to the movie theater.

The Vampire Bat (1933)

Recorded this off TCM last year and just now got to it. Main reason I wanted to watch was the presence of Fay Wray of King Kong fame. This was philosophically similar to the Frankenstein story and perhaps the most uninteresting movie I’ve seen. Not good or bad, just not engaging to me in any way. I think that even back in the day they used famous actors to sell subpar movies.

Drag Me to Hell (2009)

A not too bad story wrapped in a bunch of gross out jump scares. From Sam Rami with shades of The Evil Dead style mixed in.

I've never really liked horror movies. I remember as a young kid going to the movies with a friend one winter night and we couldn't see what we originally wanted so we saw a horror movie (OG Halloween?). Next morning I have to delivery papers in darkness and silence and I was looking over my shoulder constantly. Never did my route so fast lol.

The Black Cat (1934)

A not horrifying movie that tries very hard to build tension with music and fails at that part. The movie stars both Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff, the two biggest icons of early horror. Both play men of rather unstable mind and act in the wooden way they do when made up as monsters in other movies. It was still an interesting inter play between them in which a couple on their honeymoon get caught in the middle of. The sets are all interesting designs depicting rooms of a very modernist house built on a cursed site. Lots of sexual innuendo worked into this one, but that wasn’t uncommon just before the censorship codes were enacted.

A Bucket of Blood (1959)

A stylish Rodger Corman direction. Not the most original of plot devices, but the beatnik art setting is interesting and it has a beautiful leading lady named Barboura Morris. Watched on TCM this morning - a strange way to start a Sunday.

Godzilla, King of the Monsters! (1956)

An Americanized version of the original Gojira (1954). It does not flow like the original Japanese film and is not as good. But for a production that integrates scenes of an American reporter by splicing new scenes, dubbing scenes from the original in English, and using some in original Japanese, it worked fairly well. The adult me greatly prefers the original with subtitles, the child me that saw it over 50 years ago was still awed by this mostly English language version and probably wouldn’t have liked trying to watch the original. The monster footage is the same and still effectively set up.

garyt1957 I saw Godzilla Minus One a few weeks ago and think it is very good. You have to be okay with subtitles though, and I am.

The others were great when I was a kid, but not good when viewed as an adult.

Dr. Phibes Rises Again (1972)

Last year I watched The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971), but didn't get around to watching the sequel. The sequel is more of the same. Creative ways to kill his enemies, sometimes with intricate mechanical devices and a Saw like trap for the principal opposition. Way ahead of it's time with regards to unique kills and giving some victims hope of a way out. The way it ended made it look like they never planned any more sequels. I thought both movies to be quite entertaining and well made even though the killer always seemed to know more than would be possible at any given time. Vincent Price was great for this role and the bungling Scotland Yard guys added some good relief at times in the films.

The Exorcist (1973)

I watched this with my kids on Friday night. Prior, I had seen it twice before. Once in the 80’s, once sometime in recent years. Both of those times this movie really gave me the chills. This time it was a little blunted since I’ve seen it not too long ago. Still, I love the setup with the archeological digs, the makeup used on Linda Blair, and the background setup for both of the priests. Very good movie 51 years later.

The Exorcist, I saw as a 16 year old, growing up Catholic raised. Saw it without much advance knowledge. Scared the hell out of us. It was a tough watch.
Funny, sometime around 1974-75, I met Linda Blair in a local establishment. She was enjoying the music of a band her boyfriend was in. Was very nice.

Frankenstein (1931)

Still rather amazing 93 years later. Little time wasted to plot progression in exposition, but the creators in front, and behind the camera were skilled enough to craft character emotion that didn’t need explanation. The screenplay doesn’t really capture the humanity of the monster like the book, but the abnormal brain was a quick and effective way to get to the horror.

The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016)

A highly disturbing movie that I wish I hadn’t watched. The production, acting, and effects are all good. However, the visuals, kind of like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, are more disgusting than scary. The ultimate cause was interesting, but not worth the experience in my opinion. On Netflix.

garyt1957 Some movies it works for me, some it doesn't, and I'm not sure I can tell you what makes the difference. One of my favorite movies is a Korean revenge flick called "I Saw the Devil". Like another "Oldboy". I haven't seen Hostel because I think I can tell it's one of the kind I won't like. "The Last House on the Left", was one I didn't like at all. I have seen portions of "The Hills Have Eyes", but for some reason, probably the same that you don't like it, I never finished watching it. If it is portrayed realistically, I think the ending has to have some element of hope, or at least that what I just saw is over and done with.
