garyt1957 So Gary, went again today. Nice to have free time…. So there’s this guy there who brought his own small hitting mat. The mat was probably a 2” multi layered mat. It was probably 3 feet long and 1 foot wide. Like an insert for a mat you would stand on.

This knucklehead had that mat ON TOP OF THE MAT HE IS STANDING ON. So now he’s hitting irons with the ball 2” higher than the mat he is standing on. WTF??

Typhoon Actually I should probably do this. You rarely get a level lie at my course so any practice at the range is only good for tee shots.

The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971)

Another Vincent Price special. Saw this when I was a kid and think I was put off by the sanguine music played throughout the film. I understand it’s use now even if I don’t have great appreciation for it. Anton Phibes does kill in very inventive ways and the body count was quite high for a movie back in the day. That last act is almost a precursor to Saw. Although the stories and motives are very different, Anton Phibes very much resembles the phantom in The Phantom of the Opera.

I watched "Renfeild" on Amazon. Nic Cage as Dracula? Gotta love that. It wasn't bad, weird mix of comedy and gore.

KCee Ha! Our range has 5 spots that are level and face down range. Everything else is a slice lie for a righty. And not just a little, some mats are so worn that the ball will roll off away from you.

Creature Walks Among US 1956. The Gill Man is a great monster. Evidently Guillermo Del Toro wanted to do a Creature remake but Universal balked so he went elsewhere and made The Shape of Water which was a remake without using the name and won 4 Oscars. Universal must've been kicking themselves as their classic monsters reboots haven't done too well

Typhoon LOL! The ranges near me have a few areas like that. It's hard to get your ball to stay put. Of course if the ball is moving I have a better chance at making good contact lol.

House of Usher (1960)

Another Vincent Price/Roger Corman/Poe work. A tight drama with little horror until near the end. Vincent Price as I haven’t really seen him before. His character was nervous and full of dread from the beginning. The TCM analyst seems to think this was the best of Corman’s Poe adaptations, but I think The Masque of the Red Death was much more fun and menacing.

garyt1957 I mostly enjoyed the Hammer films for the cleavage! I did like Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee too. A lot of repetitive studio sets, which seem commonplace in low budget horror films. I like them, but not to the level of classic Universal movies. Nothing stands out as very memorable to me except in the differing ways Dracula gets killed.

Halloween H2O (1998)

First time watching it. I never wanted to watch more initially after the first 3. This one wasn’t a half bad continuation of Michael vs Laurie 20 years later. Ended in a rather stupid way like some of the others. None can compare to the original, which comes on next.

Ok, so neither my wife nor I had ever seen Halloween. So she suggested that we watch it today, if for no other reason than to say we had seen it.

Wow, it was really pretty bad. There were so many obvious continuity errors that it almost became comical. Pretty much everything that happened, aside from the very first scene, was predictable. Acting, aside from Jamie Lee, was pretty bad. Many parts were completely implausible.

Oh, and it really wasn't that scary.

I have no ldea why people consider this a classic, or some kind of masterclass for horror movie making. Color me very unimpressed.

The first, and worst, mistake one can make when watching a horror movie is to go in thinking it's an Oscar worthy production, or a documentary. Budgets were very low for the most part.

Having said that, most classic movies like this got better as they went along, until they got tiresome. JMO

rsvman2 To each his own. I've seen it probably close to a dozen times over 40 plus years and l still think it is a great horror movie. I thought the acting, for the most part, was pretty good. The musical score actually amps up the tension for me. I've never noticed the continuity errors and generally don't look for them in movies unless I've completely lost interest in the story and have gone full Mystery Science Theater. There certainly are many implausible events, but that is mostly what makes up horror.

rsvman2 It started the whole "slasher" genre (not that that is a good thing) so it will always be important for that reason. I was 20 when I saw it and thought it was great and scary, too. My current self probably wouldn't feel the same way. It really wasn't very gory.
I saw bits and pieces recently and there were some goofy things , like kids seemed to be trick or treating at midnight. And who carves pumpkins late on Halloween night? Stuff like that you just have to ignore but you wonder why the writers didn't see how ridiculous some of the stuff was. But being the first of it's kind, it deserves it's classic status.

Director John Carpenter actually wrote the music for the movie. He did the movie on a small budget as well. I knew someone who lived where they filmed it in California.

“Using only a synthesizer, Carpenter wrote and performed all of the film's music—including the now-iconic Halloween theme—and transformed the film from a shrug to a shudder.”

“Halloween” was made for around $320 000 and shot in 21 days in 1978. California subbed for Illinois, March subbed for October”

“The Halloween films collectively grossed over $884 million at the box office worldwide.”
