Saw (2004)

First watch. Never saw it, or any other in the franchise. Very effective even though I've learned bits and pieces of the premise through the years since its release. It was well done for what was obviously a very low-budget movie and although it is an old movie by now, I did not know how it ended. I've heard most of the additional versions are more in the torture-porn spirit and so won't be watching them, but this original is absorbing and tense. Based upon this movie and The Conjuring, I'll say that James Wan knows how to make scary movies. On Amazon Prime.

Night Monster 1942 Bela Lugosi Pretty good whodunnit/monster flick. Bela Lugosi in a small secondary role. He'd take any part in any movie if it paid him a few bucks.

In the Mouth of Madness (1994)

A John Carpenter movie that I never wanted to see before and have watched for the first time tonight. Written in a non-sensical way to allow depiction of anything desired upon the screen for seemingly no reason, it was just a nicely framed and shot movie with good actors in it for the first hour. In the last half-hour when the reveal is made it became a very clever story that made me very glad to have finally seen it. It triggered thoughts that pulled me out of the movie occasionally to think about other things in a way that no other movie has. On YouTube with ads. The ad interruptions are frequent, but brief.

Bride of Frankenstein 1935 another classic. Nobody should have been allowed to play the monster after Karloff

garyt1957 It is crazy and seems pointless up until a certain part of the movie, then it veers into philosophical and spiritual dimensions that don't necessarily make sense outside of the movie (except perhaps 21st century news reporting 😆), but does put the events of the movie into perspective.

The Mummy (1932)

Not a very suspenseful movie these days. Hard to believe it’s 90 years since the many great Universal classics. Boris Karloff’s makeup was iconic. Jack Pierce, who also made him up for Frankenstein was a master!

The Mummy's Hand 1940. Probably the first one I've been kind of "meh" on. Wasn't horrible but not a favorite.

We watched The Goosebumps season 1 on Netflix last night. Only 5 episodes, it was great.

Rickochet I saw Poltergeist when it came out, and I saw Wait Until Dark years before that. That is the sum total of the horror movies I have seen.

The Raven 1935. Lugosi, Karloff. Lugosi always seems to be playing Dracula. Karloff used a lot of his body language from playing Frankenstein's Monster. We're they one trick wonders?

We watched Haunted Mansion and Totally Killer. I don't really care for horror movies, but the wife likes them. Totally Killer was stupid enough to amuse me.

Yea, I get that but even when not playing Dracula it seems like Lugosi is playing Dracula if that makes sense. Well not as Igor in Son of Frankenstein. I watched one recently where he was just a butler and you'd think he was playing Dracula. It just seem like he didn't have much range.
And surprisingly in The Raven Karloff uses moves and sounds of the Monster. There's one part where he uses the Monster's growl and motions that's almost jarring as it's so reminiscent of the Monster. Maybe that's just what the director asked for.
I always thought Karloff was spectacular as the Monster , showing emotions without speaking and actually making you feel sorry for the creature.
But yea, they were definitely typecast in the horror genre.

To continue the Poe/Price/Corman theme from others - “The Masque of the Red Death” (1964). Vincent Price has never been more dastardly. Nothing terribly frightening. It is an effective, and only somewhat exaggerated, display of the evil that men do. One of Vincent’s greatest lines - “This is no church!” Some really cool set designs too.
