Had a 3 putt Par back in July. Was playing a course I hadn't played in years. Hole 18 is a dog leg left with trees protecting the green, and you have to hit over a road and OB if you want to go at the green. I figured what the hell and gave it a rip. Hit the best drive of the day, missing the trees and rolling onto the front section of the green. Like you, the hole was on the other side of the green. Putting up hill I hit it a little hard and rolled it past. Missed the combacker for birdie and settled for par.
Years ago I had way more eagle putts then I do now, but you are right, sometimes I think we get greedy instead of just lagging it close to give a good look at birdie.
