SHAFT FLEX QUESTION

I have two drivers that are identical (same shaft length, shaft, grip, head ,flex, weight, SW, etc.) The only difference is that 1) one head is 13* and the other is 10, and shafts are installed almost identical (They are w/i 10) into the heads. Yet, I cannot get the same feel out of the 10* that I can out of the 13* one. And the 10* feels stiffer than the 13* when I swing it. The ball comes off the latter hot, but the 10* is only so-so. Besides loft, any thoughts on what is going on? Maybe its loft but given the same wt., etc. I don't think so. Am I wrong? What's going on here?

You may be 'feeling' torque and spin as feel differences plus what PappaD said.

Weights of the heads? Lighter weight can make a shaft feel stiffer? Maybe one shaft has a very heavy spine that needs to be oriented in a different position?

Maybe the shafts are not identical. They may have the same paint, logo, etc., but.....

I think it’s extremely unlikely (impossible) that the shafts are identical. There are way too many characteristics/variables/tolerances. How different are they is a better question to ask. True weight, balance point, spine, residual bend, cpm’s, consistency of paint, etc….

Same can be applied to the heads, grips to a degree as well. All add up, in my opinion.

Very true. But there needs to a be a considerable difference in the shaft for the average golfer to ever notice a playability issue. The fact remains now that when the 10 degree is hit, there is already a preconceived notion that the eventual shot will be less than acceptable.

My question as it was a bit unclear. Are both heads the same model and same manufacturer? Just different lofts?

I think you are right--spine orientation seems to be different between the two shafts. I put a weight (3 lbs) on the two to see what deflection I got. The 10* deflected 7.5 inches wrt a fixed baseline and the 13* deflection was at 8 inches. Plane of deflection was perpendicular to the plane of swing, but I think it still proves something.

It really only proves that you have a 3 pound weight lying around. ☺

Graphite shafts are always sanded. Table rolled shafts (often with a heavier spine) more so than filament wound shafts.

You also might not have used the same clamping pressure as a result of one shaft being thinner in the butt than the other.

Only one way to settle that. Have each club FLO'd. It will show frequency number as well as if one is wildly different when it starts looping all over the place.

It's an angular measurement ( an eyeball guess in this case). Not 10 inches, but 10 degrees.

When you can't find a physical difference in clubs, it comes down to poon.

SMT Yep. Same Model just different lofts. They are Callaway clones ---Pinemeadow Excel titanium 460. Same shaft, Same grip exactly as assembled by Pinemeadow. The 13* pops off clubhead, the 10* not so much. I can "feel" the difference in them.

Ringoblack I believe you have to cover the whole club, but I'm unsure of the rest of the ritual.....I can never remember anything after the peyote kicks in.
