Yet when Tiger came after all the scandal, they set up a special press day just for him, so it could be dealt with and move on to the tourney.
Hmmmm.

DonM Tiger only pissed off his wife and wives in general.....those that hardly watch or even care about golf.

Nothing Phil did affected the Masters at all. They said they didn't want the media stir to take away from the tournament, yet let Tiger compete. Most casual fans don't even know what Phil did. EVERYBODY knew about Tiger. It's a double standard no doubt, especially with Phil being a 4 time champion.

garyt1957 Not sure if that is true. It is an 'invitational' tournament. Tiger cannot just show up to play, even with all his wins. He still has to get the 'invite'; Phil must not have gotten one.
But, not sure if the invites are something public, per qualifications, or if there are actually letters sent out. (??)

I remember looking at the list of players when it first came out and Tiger has been on it from the start but Phil hasn't.

azgreg Apparently, he was not sent an invitation, as they do send them out.

So, you may well win 50 of them, but if they don't want you there, you will not be there, without the invite!
Probably the only mention of Phil, will be in the GC studios, not on The Masters broadcast. Remember, THEY do control, everything.

Par4QC Every past winner has a lifetime invite. They asked Phil not to come. Now, had he insisted on playing I'm sure they could have denied him, but why? He didn't do anything to them .

I think Phil probably feels so 'outed' by his peers right now, he might not tee it up for sometime.

It looks like Tiger is playing afterall.

garyt1957 OhI agree and I think Phil should be playing....unless he really doesn't want to. IIRC Gary player has said worse things concerning apartheid and women and he gets to tee off with Jack.

Par4QC You do not just 'show up' to the ball, without the invitation, sorry.

It's semantics. Do you think they just send out the invites a week before the tournament? Phil likely had his invite already. That's why they asked him not to come.

Who decides who gets invited to the Masters golf tournament?
The Masters golf tournament is technically an invitational. But that doesn't mean a committee of Augusta National Golf Club members sits down and decides who gets to play and who doesn't. There are qualifying criteria for playing in the Masters, and a golfer who meets one of those criteria automatically qualifies to receive an invitation to play.

One of those qualifying criteria is a past champion so he automatically qualifies.

                    garyt1957 automatically qualifies

                    ....if invited!!

I can keep this up all day, btw. Nothing to do otherwise. 😆

How do you qualify for the Masters?
There are no qualifying tournaments for the Masters, and no alternate spots in the field. Players get into the Masters by invitation only if they fulfill one of the 19 criteria, which can be found here at Masters.com. There are special exemptions given out as well, but they are rare.
