In-depth interview with Phil Mickelson. IMHO, he truly needed the time off from golf to get his head on straight. He makes it sound like he was in a really dark place and his support team has helped a lot. I'm cutting him more slack and I think the apology he makes in the interview is sincere.

One observation; he mentions the quality time he spent with Amy but never mentions his 3 kids. I wonder what that is all about?

Are his children old enough to not be living with their parents full-time? (The Mickelsons' youngest was born in 2003, so is old enough to be at college.)

Spuzz A good musing sir, not playing in PGA Tour events hurts them in World points, plus other ways it gains exemptions into the Majors. Same with Ryder Cup, still need to qualify or change the entire selection into Capt choices, then the PGA Tour may need to re-think.

Bravopilot I would LOVE to see whoever the RC captain is pick DJ as a captain's pick just to see the heads explode!

azgreg OK, didn't know that, but I was talking about PGA, not the Tour. The PGA owns/runs The Ryder Cup on the US side. He can join PGA, not sure how tedious it is but they lost the automatic route. Be interesting to see if a former PGA Tour member can pass the test on the course.

MartinD - good point on the kids now being adults. My how time flies. If I was in as a big of a funk that Phil touched on, I'd want my whole family around me for additional support. And maybe they were.

Although I usually don’t care for Brandel Chamblees opinion, he pretty much stated the same points as Shackelford.

colej - So, it's OK if we attempt to buy Saudi oil? It's documented the White House has already reached out on multiple times. And the POTUS is planning a personal trip to Saudi Arabia in July (postponed from later this month) and a meeting with the Prince is being worked on. But, we skewer golfers for playing in their fledgling league. IIRC, there was a strong field in the earlier tournament hosted by the Saudi's with waivers granted by the PGA Tour. And I thought there were only minor rumblings about who and why those players participated.

azgreg. It has to start somewhere. But I agree to me LIV tournaments are on par with " The Match". But I'm not enough a pro golf fan to care about anything but the majors anyway. I imagine the early PGA pro tournaments weren't looked on as anything but exhibitions either

mikeintopeka. That's my point. I totally respect any player who takes a stand or any golf fan who does, but China kills more people in a year than SA could ever imagine, yet all our cupboards are full of their products. The US sells the Saudis billions in arms every year (how many have died from those weapons?), and we buy Saudi oil. Yet some pro golfer HAS to make a stand? What can be more hypocritical than that? Frankly, I think a lot of its jealousy that these guys can make that kind of money and they cant.

Rickochet I am certainly not a lawyer but I have to believe they were given the legal advice to resign rather than not. I'm still thinking by resigning before being banned that somehow gives them a way back, even if they had to requalify, they couldn't just be banned for life?

Eguller what legacy does Na have? I'd say Na-ne. ( I thought that was clever, lol) same for almost everybody but Phil and Sergio. But we may find out Phil is really desperate money wise to keep his lifestyle flowing due to the gambling.

I don’t know the details of what they get or don’t get while retired, but I would think it is a tough legal argument to ban them permanently from the tour for playing for LIV if they weren’t a PGA Tour member at the time they played. Clearly that would be an anti-trust issue for the PGA Tour.

I think the PGA Tour’s biggest concern is that this league takes off with Saudi money and begins to get mainstream corporation sponsors as well.

Jeff Bezos made Amazon king despite losing boatloads of money for years because they were undercutting competition because they had a slew of venture capitalists willing to lose short term for a long term windfall.
