Yup. It has a name 'whataboutism'. It's often used as a response with the goal of undermining the legitimacy of the criticism itself. To muddy the waters and distract from the criticism. Basically it's a tactic implying that the criticism is invalid because no one is completely blameless.

I might disagree in this case. Do you know for certain that the specific Saudis sponsoring LIV golf have committed atrocities? I am not a fan of the Saudi nation, but I don't doubt that our nation has done worse. If someone chose not to deal with any nation, company etc that was involved in something awful they would likely need to shut themselves off from the whole world. Not exactly whataboutism IMO.

This is what will be interesting to me. How hard will the PGA Tour come down on the members that play in the LIV tournament in London?

“As communicated to our entire membership on May 10, PGA Tour members have not been authorized to participate in the Saudi Golf League’s London event, under PGA Tour Tournament Regulations. Members who violate the Tournament Regulations are subject to disciplinary action.”

Interestingly as well is Rory doesn't think the PGA Tour should drop the hammer on players that play in the LIV event next week..

The PGA Tour is overplaying a fairly weak hand. They are starting to look bad too IMO.

DonM Agreed, yet Mickelson was/is hammered to state out loud LIV is the leverage the players can use to drive the Tour to more transparency and players' rights to their image. He was right about the US Ryder Cup process after the failed Watson effort.

MBS runs the show right now in Saudi Arabia. To believe he is unaware of atrocities is naive.

And respectfully disagree. People who divert away from the Saudi’s record on human rights / atrocities and their attempt to sportswash it all away with the argument that other countries do the same, is trying to delegitimize the criticism. AKA ‘whataboutism’.

KCee I tend to agree The Chinese have done way worse than the Saudis could even imagine and yet we all have Chinese products in our home. It all just seems a little selective to me .The Saudis killed a reporter? Do you realize how many reporters have disappeared in China? There are still scientists missing who dared to speak out during the early stages of the covid crisis.
If a player wants to make a personal stand I think that's great. But I won't hold any ill will to those who do play.

Nobody cared where the money came from when the Tours were sanctioning events in Saudi Arabia. It's not until there is a competitor that they have issues.

I can't see how the PGA Tour wins any lawsuits and retains their Non-Profit status (the title of which is the biggest joke going in all walks of life. The head of a Non-Profit often makes in the millions).

Sneakylong I have no love for the Saudis, but avoiding dealing with ANY entity that has no history of wrong doing would be very difficult. If I chose to do that I would definitely have to leave the USA. The last company I worked for sold weapons to the Saudis (approved by our gov't). I didn't like it, but I needed a paycheck....should I be cancelled? I probably bought gas that originally came from the Saudis......cancel me. Again I don't like them, but I'd probably take their millions and donate at least 25% to fighting/righting their atrocities. I'm not going to throw stones at DJ from my glass house.

It’s a messy complicated world. And we all have our own lines in the sand.

I have no control over what our government does except by voting etc.. But I do have full control over what I personally find objectionable and can exercise my own form of protest.

Which consists of voicing my opinion and protesting by boycotting. In this case not watching any of the LIV tournaments (if they find a broadcasting partner lol).

And yeah, any player who participates in an LIV tournament is persona non grata to me.

You make some very good points. How about 100%. Everyone/country has problems, It goes to the extent.

I simply don't care for their history: most of the 9/11 hijackers were Saudi, indescribable killings, treatment of
women, many more issues. I vote with my wallet and will not support bad actors in any way possible if I can.
Many previous Sponsors are doing the same.

Yep. He can actually hide there since the only people aware of the LIV tour is a dozen Golfbuzzers and the players themselves. 😂
