If this is political then it can be moved. Is the even slight chance of human extinction political? Anyway, saw this (this) morning and it got my attention.

One of the founders of AI had previously said there was like a 10% - 20% chance of AI destroying the world (human extinction).

If they do reach the point soon where they don’t need human input to improve / steer / control the technology we can only imagine some catastrophic scenarios.

One nightmare I heard this morning was AI coupled with robotics / robots could release a pathogen to wipe out humans. 😲

Those old enough to remember the movie 2001 a Space Odyssey (1968 Stanley Kubrick) will remember Hal the computer that killed two of the astronauts when it overheard them talking about Hal’s demise.

Hal’s demise was eventually realized when another astronaut returned and ended Hal despite Hal’s pleas to be saved. lol

Anyway, while the upside of AI is fascinating and potentially life changing for the positive. We seem to be advancing AI’s capabilities with very little restraint to consider the downsides.

And Anthropic seems to be warning we may want to get more of a handle on it before there is any potential catastrophic consequences.

“Geoffrey Hinton the Nobel Prize-winning computer scientist widely known as the "Godfather of AI" Previously at Google, he famously left to speak freely about the dangers of AI. He previously estimated a 10% to 20% chance that AI could lead to human extinction within the next three decades.“

And Thomas Friedman has said AI needs to be thought of as a new species. Anyway, something to contemplate this Friday afternoon. lol

Bottom line is self interested companies seldom have the motivation to regulate themselves. History tells us that.
