We have a guy at our club who is close friends with a guy known as "Big Red."
Big Red is a prolific long-baller. Our opening hole is a tight, 394-yard par4 (from the member's tee) that is protected by a small pond fronting the green at about the 330-yard range. Big Red can easily drive this hole, and if it's downwind - he can do so with a mere solidly-struck 3wood.
I cannot fathom that sort of distance... he's a big guy, tall (6-foot 7 inches) and naturally has a very wide swing-arc that generates a lot of swing speed. He's a former Titleist rep, so he's also a reasonably decent golfer, as in he's not necessarily a one-trick pony. He can play pretty well if he's swinging within himself.
Having said that, he's pretty much slightly above average in the rest of the aspects of the game, so depending on the accuracy of his long-game - so goes his team's chances in various team events throughout the season when our club member invites him to play.
But he can absolutely crush the ball.... hits it so far that my 20/20 eyesight struggles to see where it lands from the tee. He's sometimes hitting wedges into holes where I'm typically hitting hybrids/fairway woods.
What I wouldn't give to have just an additional 10% of his distance!
Of course, I'd be remiss to not consider the number of times that I've heard him say, "What I wouldn't give to have your touch around/on the greens."
Nice guy, but sometimes his length is only an advantage when he can keep it somewhere near the fairway. I'll take 175 yards from the fairway versus having to punch a low shot from under the tree limbs and hoping to somehow keep it on the putting surface.
