Irrelevant Six Degrees of Separation Stories

This is admittedly a stupid thread, but what the hell. I recently posted in another thread that I played golf in a regular foursome for sometime with the Doctor who operated on Natalie Gulbis and Peter Jacobsen. So it made me think of what other type 'six degrees of separation' stories are out there.

Here's another one of mine although admittedly it's a tragic one. Back in the early 90's the Pamela Smart murder trial was going on in Derry, New Hampshire. A few movies were made about this case (Nicole Kidman played her in one of the movies). Well it turned out that my neighbor who owned the land where our house was built (Haverhill, MA.) sold it to Billy Sullivan's ( the teenage lover of Pam Smart / murderer of Greg Smart) uncle. Our neighbor went to school with Sullivan's mother who at a high school reunion was told by Sullivan's mother that her brother (the killer's uncle) built spec houses.

Anyway, you get the drift. Not only did one of the killer's (of Greg Smart) uncle build our house, but his mother did the last cleaning and left a nice bouquet of flowers with a nice note. Haverhill, MA. is about 25 minutes from Derry, NH. where the murder took place. It was a huge story locally and eventually nationally.

On a side note Billy Sullivan (the trigger man) and his other teenage co-defendants convicted of the murder plea bargained a 28 year sentence in exchange for testifying against Pamela Smart. They were all recently released I believe in the last year or so. Pam Smart got life without parole for the murder of her husband Greg and sits in a prison in upstate New York.

One of the guys I work with dated the former wife of OJ. I believe he even had to take the stand during the trial. I am a degree or 2 away from The Juice.

Marcus Allen (once close friend of OJ's) played at my home course once. Played in the group ahead of us. Warmed up on the range next to him. Sat one table over from him in the clubhouse restaurant after the round. So, I guess I have a certain degree of separation to OJ Simpson myself. Gives me the chills. Couldn't help but see in the Buffalo / Miami game yesterday that they still have OJ Simson's name along side all the other great Bills in the stadium.

Where in Haverhill? Haverhill (pronounced Haiv-rill) gets a bad rap IMO. Used to live on North Avenue near the 495 overpass and Haverhill Country Club which is about three tenths of a mile from Plaistow, New Hampshire. We worked at the old Western Electric / AT&T / Lucent plant on Rt.125 in North Andover for 23 years.

We liked Haverhill which actually has one of the largest land masses of any city or town in Massachusetts. In addition to it's large land mass it has that typical old mill city look to it in the downtown city area along the Merrimack River.

Played a lot of golf at Crystal Springs Golf Course in Haverhill which was a good working mans course (cheap). Also, played a lot at Far Corner and Bradford Golf Course. Liked Trull Brook in Tewksbury and there was a nice course in North Reading (Hill something was the name I believe). Nice Par 3 in Middleton also.

SWMBO and I once drove 12 hours to a golf resort in the mountains north of Atlanta. Our first stop after checking in was to head to the original shop to get some tee times. I walked in and ran right into a fellow member of our club IN VA whom I had just played golf with the day before we left. Small world.

Steve Young and my father are on a first name basis, so that makes me three degrees from a bunch of famous athletes.

My wife and I,and our son's family vacationed at Lake Lure in North Carolina. At the Rumbling Bald resort, they have 2 courses there. As we walked into the pro shop, one of the members of my club at home was trying to get a game as a single. So he joined my son and I . Kinda spoiled my day, as he is an 8.

I had a nice chat with Mike Wallace in an airport waiting lounge in Detroit once. That's 2 degrees from major movers and shakers.

Also shared a smoking bench with Victor Bailey - not that famous, but he followed Jaco Pastorious as the bassist for Weather Report, whose leader, Joe Zawenal (sp?) wrote for and played with just about anyone and everyone in the jazz world.

I'm not an autograph seeker, but I try to shake hands with anyone I happen to run into, and that sometimes turns into a brief conversation.

Well, I didn't want to put this out there because we are basically sworn to secrecy, but I'm just a degree or 6 away from many, many (unnamed) famous people. I've worked for Holiday Inn a total of 20+ years.

NO.....that (unnamed)Dancing with the Stars/ESPN sidelines reporter was not filmed at our hotel. She had all of her self confidence when she left. oops, I mean if she was ever there, she would have.

A certain(unnamed) owner of the WWE actually retrieves his morning newspaper in the buff. Housekeepers have verified such by threatening a sexual harassment suit.
He also cusses at women.😐

You nailed it about downtown.

Crystal Spings is a 5 minute backroad ride away. They remodeled the course, built houses on it, tore down the beautiful old stone clubhouse and now the place is bankrupt.

I played it years ago as Crystal but not since the remodel. I drove over there in the spring but work sucking so bad I just never bothered going.

I know where u used to work. Drive that way when 495 is tied up who h is most every day.

When you tell people you live in Haverhill everyone assumes you live in the downtown city part near Haffners garage or something. But again, Haverhill I believe has the 3rd largest land mass of any city or town in MA. and there's a lot of farm land in Haverhill (or there was when we left in 2002). Used to go and pick apples at a nice farm in Haverhill.

Used to take Rt. 97 sometimes going to Salem N.H. and I remember there being more than one car dealership on 97. I think I remember where the Ford dealership is. Much of Rt. 97 was country like as I remember. Loved the proximity to N.H. and all that good stuff (cheaper booze, tax free etc.).

When we played Crystal Springs you'd sometimes see the owner out playing. He'd always have his dogs with him. It wasn't the best layout, but it was very reasonably priced. Sorry to hear it went under. Sign of the times I suppose.

I have had both Eleanor Roosevelt and JFK both say Thank You John for a personal service I performed for each of them.

Now the rest of the story. When I was a teenager I worked at a major university in the Boston area as a waiter in the Faculty Club. I have refilled both their coffee cups and they each looked at me and said Thank You John........we wore name badges...........LOL

Don't know if I've really met anyone of great fame or even have good degree's of separation. My wife and I were at a local golf course playing one day when a couple of young kids kept racing by on golf carts careening on and off the cart paths, crashing and tipping them often and being annoying. One of the course marshalls came by and I inquired about the kids. Apparently they were Laila Ali's (the boxing daughter of the legend) step children and were entertaining themselves while she was getting ready for a fight in town. Only other thing I can remember was having Rufus Thomas sit and talk with me at a football game in Memphis for about 10 minutes.
