Those SMT 479s look like a nice set. The issue I would have in picking them up is the price. At $40/head, I’m not sure I could justify them over the Forged Maltby TS2s (which I currently play) at $50/head.

The SMTs would be far more interesting at $30 a head in my opinion.

Too be honest, I think the Target Audience for a SMT479 is different than the MTS2. The "tech" may be similar but the offset in the MTS2 is far less, plus the price point with a comparable shaft to the 479 probably makes for a much more expensive purchase.

I applaud Mike/Jason for bring back the SMT line. Looks they may have leveraged Sub 70 learning and tech to help build out the brand.

The price point would always be high for GBers. But, as an alternative to a shopper looking at $1,300 for a TM P790, this looks attractive and affordable.

Anyhow, when GB gets someone to pay up and write a review, which I hope will earn "OMG" status, we will see how the forum feels then.

toraider MTS2 is far less

Would be nice if GW published offset in mm not inches🥱....anyway....the TS2 is ~ 3.5mm down to 2.5mm, so less in the long irons about the same in the middle off the set and more in the short irons vs. the 479 - 5 down to 1.5...can only speak to how the TS2,s look as I've had them and they appear to be moderate to moderate/low offset to my eye, but it's been a while!

It’s a fair point. If I were building a set for my dad who hasn’t played in years, I’d probably be weighing the 479s against something like a Maltby KE4 in which case the added hollow body tech may justify the higher comparative cost.

Yup, everything can’t be $12.00 shipped. I have no doubt that these are oem quality.

Don’t “poo-poo” offset guys. Let’s remember how much offset Ping Eye2 irons had and how easy they were to hit. “Offset is your friend” is real. Don’t be like Ricky Fowler and get away from offset so much that you can’t hit it.

Years ago I was at a work thing and they took us out to play. They gave us rentals, Callaway xhot irons. I played fantastic with those… yea they had a lot of offset… who cares when they are stupid easy point and shoot.

No issue with offset, I prefer progressive sets and I don't mind high offsets in the low irons...just a preference is all. I'm all for people enjoying the game, if it that means high offset, so be it. 👍

I think they are transitioning from the older stuff to the “new” SMT stuff, so it’s probably a mixed bag. I’m looking forward to what they bring out next year and am happy there is another major player in the OEM component biz.

I don't mind offset as long it's blended decently. Many Pings are hideous, but it's the long blade and high toe combined with the offset that can be awful. I swear it affects my takeaway lol. I have played some SGI Maltby irons with the same offset that looked fine at address.
