Haven’t been in a golf store since last February. At my old job I was in them almost everyday just browsing. Today before my TSA pre check renewal I went into Golf Galaxy. Stock levels looked good, plenty of grips…plenty of wedges, drivers and fw’s but not a ton of iron sets though.
Wedges - I liked the Callaway Jaws full toe a bit more than the TM milled grind 3. Just seemed like it was able to open up better for shots around the green than the TM. The TM was nice though…I think it was the standard sole, maybe a c grind type of sole would be better.
Irons - I haven’t seen any of the new irons in person this year. I was psyched to see the new p790. Holy crap that is by far the nicest looking iron I have ever seen. The satin finish on the face, blade length, top line, offset… a home run. Eguller, you lucky bastard. I was hoping to compare them to the p770 but they didn’t have them. I did get to see the Ping i59. I must admit I was disappointed. You can tell they are just using Nike patents. I hate the extra grooves on the face, looks like the old Nike VR irons. The back of the club is Vapor Pro without the black PVD. Another Ping gripe I have, my irons have it and the i59 do as well is a non rounded toe. The p790 face is perfect… nice rounded toe, like most irons I think… other than Ping.
That’s about all I looked at. I did check out the lousy selection of used clubs. No iron sets for some reason. The drivers were interesting… the Ping G400max that was beat up a bit with a stock Alta shaft was selling for $325… like I said before, that club holds its value!
