Tinker I’m with you, make the game about shaping a shot or hitting to a target vs just ripping the ball. If I had even a semblance of control off the tee with the driver and more time to practice, I could scorch most of the courses from the tips. Here’s a news flash, most pros believe they can get on a 600 yard par 5 with no real danger present, rip it off the tee and grab a wood, here we go. Now, that said, I have played many par 5’s that make you think twice before just hammering it. Are they still a birdie hole for a good golfer? Yeah, but at least you aren’t “settling” for a birdie. The courses need to be set up with legitimate risk/reward scenarios if you truly believe it has to be more challenging. Leave the opportunity to cut a corner or bend it around, but if you miss there’s water on either side etc. Throw some bunkers in the middle of the fairway from 260 to 320 yards, make them choose to really layup or really risk going for it, these are ways to control scoring, not “make it longer”. That won’t work.
