My wife golfs me a couple times a year, hits Driver (16), hybrid (24), 7,9,GW,sw. Almost never touched the rest. There’s not enough gap in a conventional set to justify hitting the rest. She is in the low to mid 50s most 9 hole rounds, far from good, but not one of those you hate to see in front of you.
I think we could justify a 30 degree hybrid in there too, but that’s really just because she’s a sweeper and smokes the hybrid she has (relative term), where as the irons are a little more difficult to elevate properly. With practice it’s no problem, but with the infrequency we play and her relative inexperience, it’s not as ingrained to hit down.
Biggest thing I can’t possibly emphasize enough, think about making it as easy as possible for her. Do not, even for a second, let your own preferences get involved in the process. Go with SGI clubs all the way, short, light, rounded soles, weight low and back, but her some ladies balls, encourage teeing it up in the fairway if she needs it to get going. Make it easy or it will just ruin your day lol.
