Yeah, not many players from last year are on the team this year. Sanders is obviously a great recruiter. Not to go down a rabbit hole, but I’m in favor of the transfer portal and NIL.

Coaches move all the time. Have no problem with players doing the same.

Turning a team/program around requires better talent. I doubt he cut players he thought were better than those he was bringing in. I think he was sending the right message when he promised “effort” (if not results) prior to the game. Letting everyone know that no job/position is safe - is a pretty effective way to ensure that.

Well sure, but I assumed if they gave you a scholarship you were good for the 4 years. Most coaches come in and they say you can't really judge them till year 3 or so because that's when they've got their own players. Never heard of a guy saying "Get out we don't want you any6more" to the whole team. Not sure how you could even do that with teams limited to scholarships but supposedly there is video of him doing just that.

He kept 10 returning scholarship players, and for those that were cut, their scholarships were honored - if they wanted to remain at Colorado as students only. The team “cut” occurred after their performances were reviewed (prior year and spring game) … just like any other team’s cut, it was just the volume that was different.
I suppose it did come across a little impersonal - but it was at least the truth. The team he inherited sucked, and most weren’t good enough to make a top flight program (probably why they were at Colorado in the first place). How many of those cut ended up transferring to Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, etc.?

I’m pretty much in the camp that if you use a scholarship to get a commitment from a player then it needs to be honored. I suppose you can kick them off the team, but the scholarship should still be carried through if the kid didn’t break the agreement.

Just heard that the average losing margin for Colorado was just under 30 points last year. You could get that with a couple of 60 point blowouts, but that is still ugly. If that is true then something pretty drastic needed to be done to become competitive.

Without scholarships to lure transfers in though, I’d kind of think there has to be something deeply dirty about the NIL situation.

My niece was a highly ranked softball player (along with other sports) when in high school. There were several colleges after her. My brother and her went the route of checking into a few of them, before making the choice. When they went in to discuss terms, they offered a full ride, 4 year deal for playing ball. My brother just said ....no....full ride for 4 years for her academic prowess only, and she will also play ball for you. Even back then they could take the scholarship away if you become unable to play.
She went on to be inducted into their HOF, and has had quite a career as a Doctor.

Forgot to mention she had been a straight A student for 12 years.

Academic scholarships can't be rescinded easily. Athletic types can be taken away tomorrow! Get! Out!

But, the players don't have to honor it anymore - the portal. Seems to me "loyalty" to commitment no longer exists. Such a shame...

johnnydoom Even with the new coach and new players, many experts expected three wins for the team this year. They are one third of the way there!

It was one game. Time will tell whether they are good and whether they can be competitive week in and week out.

But don't you get a limited number of scholarships a year? How could he give out 60-80 new scholarships?

Once a scholarship athlete transfers out, I assume the scholarship is now open to give to another player. But I have to assume Sanders didn't know how many would transfer out of the University when he was recruiting players to come in, so I assume he had some kind of backup plan involving NIL potential to cover the difference. I know, that's a lot of assumptions on my part. 😵

Not any more. You are allowed to bring in as many players as it takes to get to the max of 85 scholarship players. For the 2023 class he brought in 21 high school recruits and 51 transfers. 55 then current Colorado players transferred out.

Probably why he told everyone at the first meeting to check into transferring … once registered on the portal, the scholarship can be rescinded for the following term (even if they change their mind) and reassigned.

No he isn’t. Deon was a huge Brady fan. Heard Tom has worked with Deon’s son Shedeur. Watching Shedeur on Saturday he looks like a QB with a lot of poise. Not sure how far they can go in the Big 12, but they are an exciting team to watch.

Par4QC I'm sure they can take away the scholarship, but I wouldn't encourage my kid to go to a program that has a track record of doing so.

Sneakylong yes, Shadeur has #1 pick written all over him. Be looks really good. It's hard to know for sure as those two teams play matador defense but it was still impressive!

professor True. But the school can turn around and offer the scholarship to another player and still field a team. If they are poor, the player can’t finish the curriculum they started unless they can find another school with an equivalent one that will offer a scholarship for their athletic skill.

Another team that rebuilt through the portal was Texas State with 71 new players. They beat Baylor as a 27 point underdog.

That wasn't the aspect of the situation I was addressing. When I learned that the new 'administration' did their previous players "a solid", I was impressed.
I was simply talking about the change in school/athlete loyalty.
