This seems to be all the rage now with quarterbacks. Run. Give me a Montana, Marino, Brady or Peyton Manning. Prototypical pocket QB's like these guys couldn't run, but had great maneuverability within the pocket.

You can get hurt anywhere on the field, but you increase you chance of injury once you leave the pocket and run. They do protect the players more these days. But still.

The Bears are saying these are 'designed' plays for him. I say bullshit. I think I've watched enough football in my lifetime that I know a bad QB when I see one. And bad coaches. With 2 of the best RBs in the league, why TF would you 'design' running plays for your QB???
With Herbert out for maybe the season, they may want to think of putting Fields in the backfield. And put in a QB.

Sneakylong Actually heard somebody on a sports talk show say that there is evidence that most quarterback injuries occur when pocket passers get sacked, rather than when running quarterbacks get hit.
I don't know if it is true. The smart ones know when to get out of bounds or slide. Russell Wilson has been running a lot for a lot of years and has stayed pretty healthy. He times his slides perfectly.
RGIII, on the other hand, ran right into trouble, over and over again.

Sneakylong shorter careers too. And not because of injuries. It's just when they get slower their main weapon is gone. None of them are great passers.

I think alot of these QB's aren't smart enough for much of a game plan.

That's my impression watching the Bears. Wife is a huge Bears and Cubs fan and has cooked me into going to Atlanta this weekend to see the Chicago Atlanta game. It will be interesting to see if that changes after seeing a live game

Sneakylong He can throw. They know he won't stand still long enough to do it, so they 'say' they've designed plays for him to run. When he chickenshits out of the pocket.
2 300# linemen hitting you/falling on you, or a 250 LB slamming full speed into you, is not the same as 1 220# CB making 'just a tackle'. And he knows it, it appears.

My take on Fields is he can throw, has a rocket for an arm but his oline is terrible at pass blocking but good at blocking for the run.
Bears are still lacking enough quality wideouts.

Yeah, he threw pretty well at Ohio State. In the NFL he has to learn to read defenses though. He seems like he takes off too quick and doesn’t go thru his progressions.

Let’s face it though. Chicago hasn’t had a decent quarterback since when? Jim McMahon back in the 80’s. Lol

Pretty sure Fields has been sacked more than any QB in last 2 yrs.

propman He's at 36 so far this season(leader). Last season he had 36 total. Still has a way to go to pass Burrow, with 81 for this(30) and last(51) seasons. So far.
But, iirc, he did not start every game last season as he got injured(Fields).
Plus, he has already had as many fumbles this season as he did all of the last. 12...great avg/per game.

But man...can he run those designed plays. 🤣

Terrible oline, marginal receivers usually equates to a QB running designed or not. Especially if the QB has the size and speed of Fields.

rsvman2 Having watched every NFL game of Justin Fields, I agree with that. With one notable exception last game when he trucked a would be tackler DB on the goal line, he doesn't take much contact. And he is 230 lbs moving like a gazelle. I suspect he's in more danger in the pocket.

RG3 and Cam are warnings though.

For sure. Brady got hit in the knee while in the pocket. Tore his knee and was out for the season. But they’ve changed the rules protecting the quarterback more in the pocket since then.

Yeah, knowing when to slide is key.
