I have never bought a new set of OEM irons ever( other then my first set of Northwesterns). I have strictly played component clubs I built and rebuilt classic Macgregor blades. When I saw that the outfit that I bought my Macgregor bag and hybrid from( which I am very pleased with) came out with sets of irons I said “ what the hell” for 200 bucks I’ll take a shot. Carbon steel, kbs 90 steel shafts. They offer length, shaft and grip options for 299 but standard length KBS r flex and whatever grip for 199 was ok for me. I’m sure they will be oversized offset but maybe I’m ready. They should be here Thursday. Or Fri. We’ll see.

Irons came early and exceeded my expectations. Not overly large, modest offset, weight feels great. Look better in person than the pictures.

scotts33 wider than I usually use. Hit some plastic balls in the yard( in the rain) and the contact seemed comfortable. I have a set of Hogan Magnum knock offs that I can play well with . I actually expected these to be more of a shovel than they are. Lowest lofted set I will have ever used. It will be interesting to finally see if any of the modern design bull crap you hear about is really valid. The KBS regular shafts feel softer and tip softer than I expected. Will be my first experience with KBS. I’m beginning to think the modern design philosophy is flatter face for ball speed and tippy shaft for trajectory. I’ll report back after it stops raining and I get out.

sdandrea1 I do hit blades pretty solid, even3 irons. I’m hoping I get back that 10 yards a club I have lost with age. I get the blades way up in the air and find I’m needing a 9 iron at 100 yards. Nothing wrong with that but it puts me at a 150 yard 5 iron. Not looking for miracles but a club stronger won’t hurt a thing.

Rickochet If he hits his irons really high and requires a 5-iron from 150, it is likely that his swing is adding loft to the clubface at impact. So hitting a 3-iron wouldn't be much more difficult than hitting a 5-iron,except that the club is slightly longer. That may be why he can still hit blade-style long irons.

They look a little like the 2003-ish TopFlite Tours which were great clubs with a cult-like following.

That stopped when Callaway bought TF & that was it...Good Luck with your new set!!!

From what I remember Tinker was playing old style MacGregor VIP blades with weak lofts. He can verify. Add a club and half for uber strong modern jacked up irons. Compare loft to loft IMO. Club length does factor in but it's more about loft.

I play the OMG! TFtour irons from the old FGI thread. I think the lofts on these clubs are also weak compared with modern lofts, but probably not as weak as tha blades he is using. I would guess the TFTour lofts are probably about one club weaker than most modern irons, but I don't really know.

Compared with Taylormade irons now, yes, they are weak. But, they were not weak by standards then. Somewhere in this PC, I do have the list showing lofts of those TF irons, but I do recall the 6i is 29*.

Just finished 9 holes with new irons. Course was mushy but irons hit great. They’re probably 2 clubs stronger loft than my 67 vips. 4 iron was still plenty high and solid. Tough to tell on 9 holes( 8 really because one par 3 is a 5 wood) but did seam a club longer. We’re talking about 7 swings but nothing fat at all. Sole grind seams perfect. Hit one thin with 6 but it got close to the green.
