New Shaft Puller

ACK! Mine just went kaput. Got a good 15 years use out of it.

Any recommendations? Any other sellers besides Golfworks and Golfmechanix?

Sparky not sure how adventurous you are. You can build one out of a bottle jack. Mine is rock solid. You would need to know someone who can weld or have it done at a shop. Total cost should be sub $100 including a shaft clamp.

scotts33 Nope, nothing extra here now. Sold the last of them a few years ago.
Haven't really given much thought to making them myself, but always something to think about for a winter project. Maybe. 😄

Here is a hydraulic puller on ebay. I started years ago with a homemade puller made from a wood vice, then to a screw type from Golfsmith then snagged a JB Pro puller when a shop owner retired. The JB Pro is a wonderful hydraulic puller with a nice and easy to operate clamp and a 500# preload spring.

Do you just use the shaft puller on woods or irons? Both?

I have only pulled shafts from irons and I used my Mark 1 Mod 0 skinners.

This one looks exactly like the one I had https://barrettgolfextractor.com/ except that I just got mine from some guy making them in his garage and selling on ebay. Looks like I bought it early 2007, got a lot of use out of it. He must have started the website after.

Only thing I didn't like was that I lost the little clear tube that wraps around the shaft before you put it in the clamp. In it's place I used a piece of a rubber from under an old Winn grip. It did the job, but made it much harder to screw down the clamp plate. I'd been using that a couple of years, may have lead to the thread failure inside of the main block.

Does Golfworks still run the 25% off tools specials on occasion?

Sparky I used to see those on Ebay, years ago, and always thought....what a pain in the ass having to use wrenches/hex keys. Why the guy never used thumbscrews, for the clamping, shows a lack of ingenuity, and apparently, lead to a failure for you.(?)

Which screw(s) failed? the top clamping, or the worm drive that pushes the head off?

A local machine shop can get you back up and running, easily. And, will cost less than the price of new.(although iirc, you may only have paid $69.99 for that one)

I may have to start designing something. 🤨

Is there a benefit to using this thing on pulling steel shafts from irons? I just hit the hosel with a torch and pull it apart when the epoxy breaks. Seems as if this would take a lot longer.

I could see the benefit with graphite shafts.

No, this would just be for graphite shafts. But I would guess that I do 50 graphite pulls in a year, so worthwhile for me.

One of the top clamping screws. Not the screw, but the place on the main block where it screws into. $70 sounds about right for what I paid.

Yeah, I agree, those hex key screws are the weak spot. I could get it machined, but I don't mind having a reason to get something with a better clamping mechanism.

Here is my JBPro. The cap that the pushing fork is attached to has a #500 spring. After clamping the shaft you pump the jack a few times and bolt pushes out of the cap about 1/2". When the glue releases the head gets pushed off that 1/2" and you then pump the jack handle. I added a grip to the pump handle. JB took a nut and tapped it for a handle that is attached to the release valve so you don't have to dick with the flattened piece of pipe like with a normal jack. The clamp has a nice "T" handle so you can really put some pressure on the shaft.
