5-Minute Epoxy Playing Time

How long do you have to wait to safely play a club you have assembled with 5 minute epoxy? I believe that even though it cures in 5-minutes, it's still considerably longer for full cure, isn't it?

kelco9 The quick set stuff I have sets in 5 minutes and fully cures in 30 minutes.

kelco9 I am typically the most cautious person alive, but if you have nice weather today, put the club in your car with the windows closed. That car will get around 150-175 degrees and it will cure much quicker.

I think the DTG stuff I have is 5 minute set up but still 24 hours cure. Im tempted to shaft up a club now for use in 2 hours to try

The Bramptons is 5 minute set, 30 minute cure

garyt1957 I use Brampton's. What I have now, used last night, is 5/10...full cure in 10 minutes. I was building clubs about a month ago and noticed it was taking a long time to set(leftover) & was a different color. I panicked. Threw it out, opened another tube. Then I noticed I had 15-30. Grabbed the tube from the trash and it was the same. The clubs are playing good. 😉

If the LD fellas trust the quick set* who are we to be naysayers? They will take the club and hit after 10 minutes.

*Not sure what brand they use though.

I seldom use the quick set epoxy, but I have played a club an hour later with no issues.
Just check the excess mix you use, if it's still tacky don't use the club....wait til the mix is fully cured.

I'll have to do a bit more research. I'm almost embarrassed to say that I'm using Gorilla Epoxy. I just can't get myself to pay shipping on something small like that. I do have some old, unopened 2-part epoxy, but I'm afraid to use it because of its age (to give you a sense of the age, it's Golfsmith epoxy LOL). Thanks for the responses.

EDIT: Yep, 24 hours for full cure. I guess I won't set up a new driver for my game this afternoon.

kelco9 what is the temperature for that epoxy to release? You may be building clubs you will never be able to get apart without scorching the head or cutting the shaft off and drilling out.

The fast set epoxy is fine after an hour with nothing special done, I built my LD clubs and would change my clothes, head to the range and hammer away. I broke quite a few shafts and cracked some heads, the only epoxy failure was actually a long set time one that had been properly cured, go figure.

I always use a 24 hr. epoxy, but I have put a club close to a 500 watt halogen worklight for 30 minutes and taken it to the course and played it 1/2 hour later.

Par4QC Never used my quick set on anything but putters. Lol! 😂 I have so many driver heads right now maybe I should use it on them!! 🙂

LogicalOne It is a bit wasteful when doing more than 3 clubs though. And you have to hustle....have everything laid out perfectly and ready to roll, & work quick.

Taki27 Never thought of that in 35+ years of doing my own clubs. I'll have to do that on the next batch, whenever it may be.

Taki27 ive put them between the screen door and main door on the sunny side of the house.

ptjn1201 Out in the sun is also good. The heads get nice and warm. The cure time is considerably shorter at even 90 or 100 degrees.

DonM During the summer that is typically how I cure clubs. Plus it keeps them out of the house and away from the wife, lol.

DC300 My concern with it is actually the opposite. When I take clubs apart that I've assembled with Gorilla Epoxy, it takes relatively little heat to get them to release. As I say, I'd like to use actual golf epoxy, but it pisses me off that the shipping will be more expensive than the product itself! Maybe I'll have to order some iron heads and shafts to make the shipping make more sense. Oh, just looked at my wife and she's shaking her head, so that's not going to work either.

kelco9 You can probably find this locally, if you are buying the Gorilla Epoxy locally( hanging right next to it, just to your left, towards the top of the rack 🤣).
Contrary to what others may come here to say against it, it is very similar to Brampton's. Same hold, same release temp. I've used it quite a bit through the years. I will add that I have NEVER had a loose head, from this or Brampton's.
It comes in various set times also, but I've only used the quickset. And, it does smell like skunk piss when mixing. 😉
