Ferrule I.D.

So, I went to reshaft some irons today, but when I tried to push the ferrule on, it bound. I had to cut it off.

I measured the inside diameter of the ferrules with my calipers and found that they were .365, which obviously is too small for a .370 parallel tips shafts. Thinking that maybe the just make them a bit small for a snug fit, I checked the Golf Works site to see what they should measure. Sure enough, they list the inside diameter for ferrules for .370 iron shafts as, well, .370. That makes sense.

What's doesn't make sense is the .365 measurement. What shaft would these be meant for? They'd be too large for a .355 shaft. Any thoughts?

Also, if anyone has any ideas for getting this ferrule to fit, that would be GREAT, too. Otherwise, I have to wait for new ferrules before I can assemble these irons. 🙁

Heat it! Then push it on. When it cools, it will never move/come loose.

(takes practice, like all else with club building)....Push it on as far as you can before the heat. Heat it, then push it on again, as far as you can, then use the head/hosel to set it completely. You'll not need any epoxy between it and shaft, it is going to stay put til you cut it off.

A .370 round object will never go into a .370 round hole anyway. People should know that. 🤨SMH

kelco9 Tight fitting ferrules are great! As others have said, soak in hot water or take a q-tip with acetone and rub around the inside of the ferrule and it will loosen up just enough to go on the tip end, but is far less likely to creep in the future. Loose ferrules suck. I am not a fan of epoxying them onto the shaft.

Roll a piece of sandpaper up and "ream" the ferrule out a bit. They will work just fine. Any gaps will be filled with epoxy.

Par4QC BTW, when you heat the ferrule, what are you using for a heat source? Hot water or a heat gun from a distance? I'd be afraid of heating it too much and having the ferrule "collapse" when I was pushing it on.

All interesting and helpful comments. Thanks. I think I'll try the sandpaper trick before the heating, though. I don't have enough of these to "practice." LOL.

kelco9 I just use a lighter, held under the ferrule, about 6", and turn the shaft slowly as it heats. Only takes a few seconds; may have to do it a couple times with some real tight ones.

I do a lot of things much differently than most, but it's what I've found best/most efficient for my ways. Hell, I grip shafts before epoxying the heads on! 🤨

I often get tight fitting ferrules. I just get them started then tap them on the workshop floor to get them flush with the end of the shaft. I have a piece of 3/4" wood about a foot long with a hole in one end just bigger than .370 and on the other one that is just bigger than .335. Hold the shaft upright with the butt on the floor and place the piece of wood over the shaft and start tapping on the wood until the ferrule is about 1" down the shaft. Then take the club head and place in on the shaft and start smacking the shaft down on the floor. You will hear a "click, click" sound and a "clack" when the shaft bottoms out in the hosel and the feel changes. Don't use the wood block to set the ferrule in it's final position. It is too easy to tap it too far and moving it back down the shaft is a PITA. I usually do this without heat and I have never damaged anything or had a ferrule slip.

Rickochet I actually used to do this same thing. Then I bought a few tools from a retiring clubmaker and one of the tools he had was for setting ferrules. It is a metal gadget that you can set the depth and the push the ferrule on. That's all I've used since. But I when pushing on really tight ferrules with this tool, I've been afraid of it slipping and gouging my hand. I liked it better when I was pushing downward on the wooden block!

Us DIY guys often have to "MacGyver" stuff to get it done. Use what you have and whatever works is good since there is more than one way to skin a cat. 😜

BTW, lo and behold, I did a little searching around my workshop (most call it a basement) and found that I have a drill bit that measures .371". That sounds pretty handy!

You can use a 3/8" bit to ream the ferrule before installing. I do it all the time.

For these tighter ferrules, stick them on the tip of the shaft as far as you can put it by hand, then dip the ferrule in boiling water for about 5-10 seconds then grab the iron head and push the ferrule down in the final install position. The ferrule will cool down in seconds and it won't move- no drill bit required!

Wish I’d asked this question here first! I ran into tight ferrules, assumed they were the wrong size, and ordered new ones!

Which should I go with?

Jelopster NEVER use metal ferrules. Any way you look at it/can think about it, they will be a pain in the ass.

Get your ferrules from Value Golf or Diamond Tour Golf(who now has some funky nice color patterns).

Par4QC the striped ones above were the tight ones and are from DTG. Will go with the heat method!

I hit the tight ones with a heat gun for a few seconds and slide them right on.

Since you're a newbie, I suggest you run them under hot water first and if they don't move, then try boiling water.
It's easy to melt them with the heat gun or scar them with an open flame without experience.
Also, I never use epoxy on a ferrule for graphite shafts unless it's an "emergency" or you know 100% that it's never going to be taken apart. Epoxy on steel is ok but only if the ferrule is loose.

Well, thanks everyone for the help and for playing, but the winning entry goes to shokosugi! I did as he said using a bowl of boiling/hot water on my bench, and I can't believe how easily they slid on. And since you were using the head to push the ferrule on, it was the perfect depth. I'm going to use this method from here on in, regardless of whether they are tight or not! Thanks!

Glad it worked! If you decide that waiting for water to boil slows you down, the heat gun method doesn't take much practice and is a lot faster. I put the ferrule inside the loop of a roll of tape so it doesn't roll away and just blow the heat gun on the low setting on the ferrule for maybe 5 seconds.

Glad it worked. I've tried heating with the heat gun before but I found this deformed the ferrules sometimes. Hot tap water sometimes works but sometimes doesn't but boiling water works everytime!
