I'm replacing some back door steps with a treated 2 step stringer, and 5/4 deck boards for the steps. The stringer is just the right size, it will all fit perfectly. It will be attached to an existing ledger board. The thing I see is that it will be very hard to use a stringer hanger on this little stringer. There just isn't room underneath to swing a hammer.
Here is the stringer and the hanger:

In that 3rd picture, imagine it's only 2 steps, and there is a house wall. Then you can see how little space is under there to try to attach the hanger.
What I'm asking is, how about if I put a 1.5" x 1.5" notch in the bottom of the stringer end, and mount a treated 2x4 on the ledger board to carry the stringers? In my case there is plenty of ledger board showing below the stringer.
OR, make the same sort of notch, and use regular joist hangers instead of the stringer hangers?
