I agree, when emotions are peaked, better to walk away than forcing the issue immediately.

I refuse however to be passive, I won't force an issue by intimidation, but I am not Gandhi either.

    Gandhi never backed down or walked away. He did the non violent stand which in some cases will attract more violent if the other guy is enraged.
    The best way to avoid escalation is to not start it at all. If a jerk is yelling and hitting the green while others are still putting , call the club house and call the police. Weight it out before action. It's just not worth it to be "right" sometimes.
    And trust me, Gandhi weight it out before he started the movement in India. He's won the battle before it started.
