Shaft Extension May Have Broke

Had my graphite irons extended 1/2 inch awhile back and just noticed that the 7 iron grip is soft at the butt end. I can push it over with my thumb like nothing is there. Is that a big job getting that repaired?

You will have to remove the grip, drill out the old extension in the shaft, put in a new extension and re-grip. I would just play the club as it is. It is possible that the grip was never fully installed and you just noticed it. In that case just regripping it would do the trick. I would get the club back to the person who extended them and have them fix it. A 1/2" extension shouldn't break.

Thanks. I won't be doing it. I'll bring it to my local golf shop who did the work. I was surprised it broke.

Sneakylong Its odd that a 1/2" extension broke. If they installed it recently then they should take care of it for you gratis, including the grip.

It is odd. The butt of the grip looks enlarged / bulged a bit compared to the rest. The MCC Plus 4 writing is enlarged. And as I said you can push the top over a bit similar to the Pings with the new Arccos.

I also saw some fluid on the top of the grip the other day. Not sure what that was all about.
At first I thought it was from my cooler pocket causing moisture at the bottom of that bag, but the rest of the clubs didn't have any.

I decided I'll just play it the way it is. Doesn't seem to perform any different. If it does become an issue I'll take it in to have them look at it.

If you got a 'wobble' in the tip after getting a 1/2" extension installed, imo, you got a more expensive problem. The shaft broke. Unless the grip was not fully installed. If it was that, you may still have a broken shaft, due to it being flexible where the extension is. (Hope I am wrong. 🤔)

I detest graphite shaft extenders and shudder when I read about people using them. I will spend $200 for a set of shafts before I'd put just 1 extender in any.

I use these. Get the color coded gauge and order the proper size you need and they fit like a glove. Very strong as well. They are a bit expensive but these are the best I have ever used.

Par4QC I've used graphite shaft extenders up to 3" and never had a problem. Maybe just lucky

In my mind, this is the reason I would never use them. Most of them are actually stronger than the shaft butt, which can/will lead to cracking.

People probably wonder how I know all this about extenders......just ask me. I'll fucking tell you all about shaft extenders and broken shafts. 😲
Steel extenders, made from steel only, are fine, graphite are the devil.

If anyone on this forum has done more shaft extensions I will yield to their opinion but I have used the extenders Rick linked and have had no issues. Its also about who you extend shafts for type of golfer and type of swing. As a fitter/builder one would know that you qualify golfers before you do any work. It's not a one size fits all situation. ie. You don't extend shafts for a digger with a late release and higher mid-iron club head speed.

I also agree with bad9 fitter/builder stands behind their work no charge.

I had an issue years ago with a bad batch of Bramptons Grip solvent. I had shit oozing out of my grips and into my bag for weeks. I went back to where I bought the solvent and was told that there was an issue with that batch of solvent. It took me forever to get that crap out of my golf bag.

I always use old graphite shafts for extending- never had any breaks with even 2-3" extensions for drivers. Those plastic extensions that you can buy look like junk to me

That’s probably it. Come to think of it I was tapping the butt end of my G425 on the floor to loosen the head and solvent was coming out on the floor.

Some unknowing folks use to much solvent when installing grips. I would say from my local discount store this is the norm.

Is it preferred to use graphite extension in steel shaft.....I see the link for those graphite extensions are for both.....seems like it would keep the weight on par.vs. using steel. Gotta thrown the SW off using steel extensions.

Lighter fluid dries quicker than solvents. Only issue I ever had with grips was the 1 time I used a solvent. Never an issue with lighter fluid.

Look at balance point and total weight Chad. Impact stickers are always the way to find out.

scotts33 I have a set now with some extensions in and a few that don't.....I just paid attention to the head weight spread; shafts are Nipponn1150, grips and shafts were all within a gram. I ended up matching SW progression, grouped the clubs with extensions together and the ones without.
