Hosel Cleaning Method

What method do you use to get hosels cleaned after pulling a shaft. Any tips?

I have a mandrel type thing that you slide a piece of sand paper into. It works well.

Mattyv I do the same exact thing as Sparky and end with acetone on a q-tip

Really messy hosels I may have to use a standard drill bit and work on the sides, then follow up with the brush.

First, clean them as soon as you pull the shaft while the epoxy is still soft. I use the brushes shown above. I also have 6" piece of steel shaft that I have cut teeth into with a Dremel disk and use it in cordless drill to make sure I get everything all the way to the bottom of the hosel. I also have spade drill bits that I have cut the points off of and get what the other tools leave. You have to be careful with the spade bit when working on woods and hybrids so you don't chew the bore plug out or push it into the head.

Sparky These thing look interesting, and I have used the ones that came with some inventory I bought. But I was just thinking that there has to be alternatives that I don't have to send away for.

Can cut the shank and use in an electric drill.

accufitgolf I used something like this that I bought at a hardware store, but some didn't fit while others were too small. They also seemed to wear out pretty quickly.

Heat the hosel again, then put the biggest drill bit that will fit and give it a few spins then nail polish remover and you're set!

shokosugi I have been trying to use drill bits that are close, but I'm always afraid that I'm taking out some metal with them.

Copper tube brush. Available at any big box store.
3/8" for irons and 5/16" for woods.
Cut off handle and put in your drill. Or leave the handle on and do it by hand.

CallMeAl This is what I've always used. As soon as the head is off, just put it in and twist a few times....clean hosel. All it takes from there is to clean it with whatever you are using, 91% alcohol is my only choice(70% has too much water). I will use emery cloth to rough up the inside, clean again, blow out with canned air, before re-shafting again.

Just about any gun store will have different size (.335-.370) brass cleaning brushes you can chuck up in a drill.

darpar Sounds interesting, but I'm in Canada. We don't have gun stores. 🙂

I use the Hosel brushes posted by sparky. They last a long time. If they get kind of pushed down, just use a hard flat edge and fluff them back up.

Key is to clean them right after you pull the shaft so the epoxy is soft and powdery. Acetone and Qtip after the brush.

In addition to the hosel brush that Sparky mentioned I use a hosel cleaning mandrel (available from Golfworks)
